BN1250 LCD shows ZERO time remaining when under load

This was originally posted on APC forums on 3/6/2011

Working perfectly until I had a severe power spike and the UPS immediately shut down. After power was restored and everything was up and running I noticed the TIME REMAINING was at ZERO. I removed the UPS from my system, checked the UPS batteries and they were still charged. I went through the following process; charged the batteries overnight in the UPS, connected a load, TIME REMAINING is still zero, removed the batteries from the UPS and placed a load on each battery and they measured 12 VDC under loading with a 12V electric model aircraft starter. Charged the batteries overnight with a computerized battery charger/conditioner , reinstalled the batteries and had the same TIME REMAINING ZERO error.

Any suggestions regarding an internal "reset"? Replaceable fuse? Etc. Thanks, Richard

Alright, the actual runtime when the UPS ran on battery on that load is 6 minutes. Almost half of the previous runtime that you are getting. I hope you could find an APC original/OEM battery to see if there is going to be a difference.

The unit runs for a few seconds when unplugging AC and running under load. I am NOT using any software, the unit is powering a HDTV and sound system. Been working flawlessly for the last 2 years.

My next step is to install PowerChute Personal on my laptop and see what communications with the UPS will provide. Perhaps there is a software RESET?????

I just installed TWO new Yuasa batteries and will let them charge using the UPS charger. I will check tomorrow to see if this fixes the issue. The older (slightly over 2 years old) batteries passed a conditioning cycle on my bench charger BUT sometimes a flaky cell can lead to false conclusions.

Hi Richard,

After doing all of those things, have you tried unplugging the unit again from the power source for it to run on battery? If you did was it able to support the load? If yes, for how long?

What software are you using as well? Is it PowerChute Personal Edition?

Have you tried replacing the battery? Also, the UPS performs a self-test every two weeks, have you notice any indicator on the UPS?

Well, 2 NEW Yuasa batteries and the run time is 6 minutes with a 73 watt load. Turn on more electronics and the run time is virtually ZERO. This unit has two batteries wired in series for a total of 24 VDC. Measuring with a Fluke digital multimeter, the UPS powers off when the voltage discharges to approximately 24.2 VDC. My original batteries would sustain the system for approximately 15 minutes before shutting down.

With the original load attached on your UPS, how much runtime do you get now with the new Yuasa batteries?
