Auto start of loads not working properly

Hi,

I've just purchased the BX1400U-AZ and it is all setup. I purchased this one because it advertised that it auto starts the loads after shutdown.

I have conducted a test and found a condition in which my PC will not restart.

If mains is lost, the UPS initiates shutdown. The PC shuts down, so does the UPS. When the mains is restored, the UPS wakes, and my PC starts.

IF mains power is restored DURING the shutdown, the UPS shuts down, but only for a very short time, then it restarts. My switch and modem come back on, but the PC doesn't. It is becuase of the quick shutdown and wake.

This seems to be a bug in the firmware. It should delay the wake of the UPS after shutting it down for atleast a second, in order for the PC to recognise loss of power.

I will be happy to download a fixed firmware and apply it to the UPS to resolve this issue.

Regards,

Jeremy

Unit: BACK-UPS 1500G ( Only one PC is connected to this unit, the monitor is connected to the "surge protected outlet" only

PC: LENOVO ThinkCentre M series Tower

Successful "autoload" when:

  • Power is removed from the APC unit
  • System shutsdown while on backup battery power
  • and the APC unit  is allowed to "cycle" (for lack of better undertanding of terminaolgy)
    • meaning, there is a click sound, fan cuts off, and the menu is no longer luminated.
  • Power is restored to the APC unit, the PC then starts the boot process

Issue: AutoLoad not initiated under the following condition:

  • Power removed from APC unit
  • Shutdown is initiated and the PC goes into Hibernation state
  • After 30 seconds the power is re-supplied
  • The PC is not started, and will not restart. Unless.....
  • Power is removed from the APC unit again and let it sit till it "cycles" as described above.

I'm in agreement with the originator of this post, it appears to be a firmware issue. And, would welcome a resolve for this issue.

Thank you for your time.

Jeremy,

It is interesting that you bring this subject up. I did extensive testing with 3 HP desktops (all same model, features, BIOS, etc) and found that 2 of the 3 woke as requested but 1 does not in your exact scenario. The issue is with the power supply of the system. You are correct that if the delay was longer the system will restart and an enhancement request to change the delay is being discussed.

If you would like a UPS that is available now and has the ability to change the power on delay you should purchase a SMT model Smart-UPS. With a SMT you can configure the outlet group on delay to meet the needs of your specific system. So if a particular system requires an extra few seconds to power back up you can adjust the outlet on delay as needed.

Thanks for the very quick reply, that is fantastic. It has sweetened my somewhat sour experience regarding this issue.

Just an honest thought though: I do not consider this merely an enhancement request. Its more like a bug fix, or at the very least a compatibility fix. 🙂 Please make it clear during your internal discussions that customers are demanding a resolution by adding an additional 2 second delay or something. Not a programmable one like the Smart-UPS. Just a firmware/factory set delay that will ensure this feature works on every PC. I am hopeful that such a fix can be implemented in firmware.

Once again thanks for getting back so quick, and pointing out that it is an issue you can reproduce and are now aware of.

Regards,

Jeremy
