Are UPS batteries hot swappable?

We have an APC Back-UPS Pro, 1600VA/960W units, and needs a new battery. Can the battery be changed without powering off the UPS?

Thanks

S hort Answer: No

Long Answer: Generally speaking the Back-UPS Series is not designed to be hot swappable. All hot swappable systems do not require the unit to be turned over to replace the RBC.

Almost every hot swappable system the RBC can be replaced via the front. Almost every system use’s Anderson connectors or cartridges that use a shrouded push in connectors.

The user will never have to disconnect the individual positive and negative battery terminals during the replacement process.

Having stated the above there have been several instances where this was possible due to different firmware in place.

There are three possible scenarios which are outlined below which you may consider:

1. Disconnecting the RBC while AC Mains is connected will result in the unit turning off immediately and dropping the load.

2. Disconnecting the RBC while AC Mains is connected will result in the unit to continue to operate but drop the load.

3. Disconnecting the RBC while AC Mains is connected will result in the unit to continue to operate along with the load.
