APC xs1000 on overload with nothing plugged in

I have an older unit and just bought and installed new batteries.  As soon as I turn the unit on the overload light goes on along with a soild/steady alarm.  This happens with nothing plugged into the unit. I tried hitting the reset button on the back but it doesn't seem to do anything.  Any ideas what the issue could be?

So the overload LED is solid? Any other LEDs on? The button on the rear is just an output circuit breaker if you draw too much current. As soon as you remove the load, the audible alarm should go away if it was a legitimate overload.

Was it working prior to replacing the batteries or did you replace them because of this issue?

Generally this is not good with no load connected..

phudle, how difficult is this to do, is it easy to locate the the damaged part to replace it?

@ APC staff:

From what I've read on line, this entire product line has a defect that has gone ignored.

I just received a used xs1000 from my brother, it was working but I decided to give it fresh replacement batteries since his were years old. Soon as I replaced the batteries and turned it on bam solid overload light with nothing connected. Put old batteries back in, still overload...I do a quick websearch on the issue and find hundred of people with the same problem, and several links back to these forums with people who's issue was never resolved. I then jumped through your ridiculous level of hoops to signup just to ask phudle here my question. And I see those same hoops are required just to download the software. Can you guess what my opinion of the brand is now?

This isn't intended to be hostile, but I want the company to understand why I don't feel positively about its products.

hi forgottenandlost - sorry for the troubles. The hassles of our sign up process here are a result of preventing/blocking spammers mostly cry which in turn affects are legitimate valued users and it is a tough thing to balance currently for us so I apologize.

On this issue your commenting on, I did some checking with Back UPS support team but couldn't find anything regarding a trend or widespread issue on any XS models with what I can see. While this is a legitimate failure mode that can happen, I don't think it is happening to every single customer's unit and is not something we are aware of. We'd want to review those sources you did find and we'd also be interested in serial numbers, etc if there is indeed a widespread issue that we need to investigate in our current line of products. We do review in warranty customer returns, field data, etc to determine if there is a field quality issue/problem that we need to take action on.

Let me know if you have any further questions or can share those specific sources you came across.
