HI,
I have an old (out of warranty) rack-mount APC UPS 3000VA for 230V mains .It has been sitting at the corner of our IT department for a while and the current person does not know the history of it. I asked the owner of the company if I could clean it away to my home and I was given a permission.
I replaced the batteries and tried to start it up but as soon as I connect the mains - the leds in the front panel lights up. All the leds stay on even after I disconnect the mains. The on and off buttons does nothing. When I eventually disconnect the batteries the leds are turned off.
Capacitors leave a voltage of 17V in the system - which I can wear out by pressing the "ON" button repeatedly, so there is some kind of function in the panel.
I have tried several electronic repair shops (mainly TV/Video) and they don't want to take it under repair because they don't know what to look for.
Can someone help me where to look for the fault?
Sincerely
Sami Halme

When you say the leds come on, do you mean ALL of them come on? Also, did you use APC batteries or third party batteries? If all the LEDs are coming and won't go off unless you disconnect the battery, that usually indicates some sort of internal fault. It's possible the UPS took a surge? Unfortunately, we don't troubleshoot any deeper than this so the best we can recommend is to replace the unit or contact Coastal Business Machines. They are a company that repairs our UPS' and would have more information on how to fix this issue.
