APC RS1100 - Clicking sound due to voltage fluctuation

Hey all,

Of late, there has been an increased bit of voltage fluctuation in my apartment and as a result, the UPS makes clicking noises quite a few times during the day (approx 10 times per hour) I understand this is due to the AVR.

I'm trying to get the voltage problem sorted out, but I want to check if the UPS can still be operated this way, and how long it's safe to do so.

My current UPS is a replacement unit which I received a couple of months ago under my warranty. The old one stopped charging batteries due to some reason, but the UPS didn't click as much back then or there simply wasn't a voltage problem before. Is it possible that the replacement unit is somehow more sensitive to fluctuations?

Thanks!

I would definitely filter the dirty power.  It may degrade over time, but I expect that your apt power will be fixed inside a few years (hopefully!).  I have a few units that see small dips like this every other day and they've been working normally with normal battery replacement.

There is actually an option in most models to adjust the sensitivity to voltage fluctuations.  But I would caution on doing this if you know you have dirty power as that dirty power would be passed onto the devices.

If you set the unit to the least sensitive mode and it is still failing over, then the power is definitely pretty bad and I would put the sensitivity back to normal.

Thank you Samir. I will need to check the sensitivity setting on my device, once I get hold of it's manual.

Whatever current setting it is in, would it be advisable to keep the UPS under operation? i.e, letting the AVR take care of the dirty power?

Is the AVR efficiency known to degrade over time?

I have a 650W PSU and a 27 inch monitor connected to the UPS.
