I've inherited an old APC Back-ups Pro 1000, model BR1000G, batteries of unknown age. It seems to be OK, passes battery test at power up. My PC & Monitor are connected and run fine. I have the APC PowerChute Business Edition Deluxe v 9.0.1, build 606 installed. The problem is that when I connect a db9 serial cable between the UPS and my PC the UPS immediately goes to battery mode and sounds alarm. Is this a sign I need new batteries or what? I've never encountered this with a UPS before.

Hi PCwizard,
When I look up the part number on Google, such as [940-0024 (link to buy from APC)|http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=940-0024] or 940-1524, I see a few distributors offering them at different price points. I don't have any recommendations on one distributor vs another.

Using a standard rs232 cable will cause the symptoms you describe. You need the APC proprietary serial cable or something with the same pinout. See if you can find the cable that came with the UPS. It should be labeled on the connector with a part number, either 940-0024x which is a 6 foot cable or a 940-1524x which is a 15 foot cable where X denotes the revision like C, D, or E.

Thanks for the clarification on the 9 pin connector. I run into the same problem with network switches. They sure look like a db9 but they aren't. The UPS was a surplus giveaway from my last job. No cable came with it. Can you suggest the best source? Would APC be the only source? Thanks for the help!
