why the APC (smart-ups) suddenly off?

Hi, guys how are you doing?

i am new to APC( smart-ups) and i don't even know how it works and to day, suddenly becomes off. and it affects the server because the server becomes off too. is there any link between them? what is wrong the APC off? does it need a battery to change. right now, after i make server ON, there is 4 green lights are on in the APC? so, how could i know if the APC is working? how can i make disconnect and connect from the serve?
please guys i need your help?

Yeah, even I have tried http://192.168.0.2:3052. I don't have java in there OS. How could I know that the Agent is running? You mean in a work station PC?

Hi Daniel,

To better assist you with your problem, can you post the model and serial number of your UPS? These numbers can be seen underneath the UPS or at the back of unit where you plug the load/ devices. Also can you check if you have any USB or Serial cable attached from the UPS to your server and if you have any APC software installed on your server like PowerChute Network Shutdown or Business Edition.

If the UPS detects a power problem that can affect the load it will automatically transfer to battery power and waits until normal power comes back. In the event that normal power is not available the battery gets drained which will then cause the UPS to turn itself off or go to sleep. When the UPS is on this state, the outlets would turn off.

Answer to your questions
1. I don't see any serial numbers but it is a SMART-UPS 1000. And there a USB connected from APC to the server and also another power supply to the Electricity.YES, there is a software called APC Power Chute Business Edition Agent installed on the server.
since, it installed and works, it has been 5&1/2 years and still working. for more information, i am sending you an attached file for the APC picture.

Hi Daniel,

If you have PCBE(Business Edition) installed, do you have the login credentials for it? If you do please login and then click on the Smart-UPS 1000 link and choose About UPS this would give us an idea of what kind of APC Smart-UPS you have and the corresponding serial number. Also kindly copy and paste the event and data log that can also be retrieved from the PCBE Agent Interface, this would help us give an idea on what the situation is on your end.

Yes, there is a business edition installed but i found and saw this software in control panel\add remove programs. i can't find it in desk top as a short cut... but i found something here by accessing C:\program files\APC\power chute business edition\Agent.. I found pbeagent.exe, when try to open it gave me error message says, " APC PBE Agent start service control Dispatcher failed!". when i see the even Viewer the error says "
Description for event ID (0) in source (APCPBEAgent) can not be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information message DLL to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE = flag to retrieve this description." i don't understand what is saying but the UPS is still working even though, the left side lights are off.but one thing i want let you know that, the UPS is not connected with DB9 serial port. it is only connected with the USB communications port. please the picture of the UPS I have.

A manual uninstallation of PCBE is necessary for you to remove it on your registry. Have you ever replaced the battery on your UPS, is it possible that you take a picture of this unit? Do you have a voltmeter on your end, using this you can measure the voltage on the output side of the UPS. What LEDs are lit up on the UPS?

Thanks for sending the files. I've seen another post of yours here --> http://forums.apc.com/spaces/5/smart-ups-symmetra-lx-rm/forums/general/2878/smart-ups-3000-rm-self-t... What they have recommended would work for you. If you think this unit is almost 5 years old, doing a self-test would help you determin if the battery is failing or not. Also it would be best if you can open the battery compartment door and see if you could see a sticker on the battery, it would tell us how old are the batteries or if those are the original ones that came with it.

The model/ serial number of that unit is usually located at the back of it where you have the equipment/ load connected.

Today I asked a UPS company, told them about it and I think they will come and check it. Right now, my question is it possible to uninstall the UPS, power chute software and reinstall it again. Because I want see from the beginning how it works? Do you thing the server will stand and will run if I disconnect the UPS? The Last thing I want to know is about the power chute business software, I can not find the CD for this software so, is it possible to download it? After the battery is changed, and the software downloaded, which one I Install first? Could you give me any website to download the power chute software please?

You can uninstall/ reinstall the APC PowerChute Business Edition Software while you are waiting for the replacement batteries. You can download the free Single Node Agent (PCBE 8.0.1) from this link --> http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=125. Make sure as well that your Operating System is compatible with it. I've attached the compatibility chart on this post. If you cannot manually remove PCBE on a computer please let me know what Operating System you have.

My operating system is Win server 2003 sp2 standard edition. I removed the power chute from my system (control panel add remove) and I have downloaded the software from download link you gave me and installed in my system but I can not find the software on the desk top ….after I installed the new software, one of the lights from the left side is coming is still trying a kind of blinking. Right now, where can I find the software I installed? Because during installation asked me user name and password but I can't see the software i installed

If you are on the computer where you installed PCBE you can use try this --> http://localhost:3053 or http://127.0.0.1:3052 . If you are trying to access it remotely it can be done by using this --> http://:3052, just replace with the IP of the computer where you installed it. You also need to include http:// and the port 3052.

i found something here, i go to start....all programs....APC Power Chute Business edition..Agent Web interface. when i click this internet explorer, i found http://127.0.0.1:3052 written in the address bar But i can't see any thing it is Blank. and i tried also using the server address http://192.168.0.2:3053/. this is not working.

It should be http://192.168.0.2:3052. If you'll end up on a white screen kindly update with the latest Java. Also, make sure that the PCBE Agent is running using the services window. Have you tried accessing it on a remote PC?

i am sorry JonPro, because i posted 4 times by mistake and trying to remove it but i can't. any way, i have download and installed the Java. now, it is working i longed in and saw, everything. when i click the Smart-Ups 1000, on the right side saw, UPS parameter status, Power status, Battery status. Battery charge is 100% and Battery Voltage is 27.4VDC. So, do you think it needs to change the Battery? what should i need to know in side there?

PCBE shows you the status of your battery if it is charging or not and how much charge and volts it have. One way to know/ detect if there is a bad battery is by going to the Diagnostics Menu/Link under the Smart-UPS 1000 and run a self-test under Diagnostic Action. This would cause your UPS to run a self-test and would diagnose if there is bad battery. Please be informed that by doing a self-test it will force your unit to run on battery to determine if the battery can still hold the charge, provide backup power and if the rate of discharge is still within range. If there is a bad battery on the unit or it is not working well it might cause all of your load/ equipment attached to the UPS to turn off. If the battery fails the self-test it would also show a solid replace battery LED in front of the unit.

To know how old the UPS is you can check it under About UPS. It'll show you the last battery replacement date and the UPS serial number, from the UPS serial number we would know how old the UPS is.

I have already download the Java and installed it. right now, i log in and opened it. when i click the smart-UPS 1000, on the right side saw the parameter status, battery status and power status and the Battery charge is 100%, battery Voltage is 27.4VDC. So, now do i need to change the Battery? what do i need to know from this description?

Yes, there is a perform self –test and select diagnostic action. But when I am free, I will apply self-test. But before I do this test, I will back up my database in the server in case any thing happens to the system. by the way, What would happen if the battery fails, will it turn on and run again ? Or it will be off forever until i change the battery? About the UPS (UPS information parameters) UPS Model = Smart-Ups 1000, Firm Ware Revision = 600.3.1, Manufacture Date = March 10, 2005, Serial Number = AS0511331948, Battery Replacement Date = 03, 2005. This is the information. So, my question is, is it possible to know and identify whether the Battery needs replacement or not with out making a self-test by seeing only the information?

The serial number of your UPS tells us that the unit was manufactured on the 11th week of 2005 thus making the unit 5 years old already. The typical life expectancy of our batteries is 3~5 years, if there is a bad battery on the UPS there are a lot of scenarios that might happen. Some customers experienced a drop load problem, unit would not turn on and the replace battery indicator on the UPS is solid red.

i have some thing to tell you, the server is connected to the UPS and the UPS to the Electricity. That means the server is totally depending on the UPS. And the UPS is still working ( but i am not sure how well). Suppose let say, the UPS is not doing back up any more so, what is the benefit of connecting the server to the UPS if it doesn't functioning properly? What if I don't change the battery will it work like this for a long time?

The purpose of the Replace Battery LED is one way for our UPS to notify the enduser that a battery needs to be serviced/ replaced. When the UPS is online, it is just passing power from the wall outlet/ AC power source to the load attached to it. If the UPS doesn't show the Replace Battery Indicator it means that the battery is good. Our UPS is programmed to perform a self-test every two weeks, this can be changed though using the software.

If you haven't gotten any problem or issues with this UPS and the runtime has not been affected feel free to use the UPS. To be on the safe side since you are new with this product I suggest that you let it run on battery for you to have an estimate on the runtime that it can provide.
