i dont have the exact "engineering specs" but all of these SMT units but i'd like to stress that they are designed to run the fan whenever it is neccesary to keep to battery at optimal temperature for the most efficient and longest service life possible. common scenarios it will come on are when you are running a high load above 70%, UPS is in on battery, internal temperature gets too hot, etc. now just because i say that, does not also mean that the fan should make your room sound like a wind tunnel. i personally do not have one of these units but the tech specs for that fan state that is 24vdc max and goes up to 2700rpm if its running at 24vdc. also, acoustical noise for the fan itself is 32dBA max.

>

Online means the unit is not on battery; They're opposites. While online, the unit is charging the battery. This creates heat and batteries don't like heat, so the fans may still run.

If noise were a concern to me, I would make sure the noise of the fan running (32dBA max according to ipicKedawinna) is acceptable before purchasing the UPS. According to [this table of sound pressure levels|http://www.sengpielaudio.com/TableOfSoundPressureLevels.htm] it should be very quiet:
- 25 dBA - Sound of breathing at 1m
- 35 dBA - Very quiet room fan at low speed at 1m
- 40 dBA - Sound may distract from concentration

the UPS will not charge the battery forever. a recharge from a dead battery may take 12 hours at most but more like 6-8.

[on the product page|http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SMT1000I], it indicates that SMT1000I accepts an RBC6.

after all of the feedback on fan noise that there has been, it has been addressed. for some reason if you buy a unit and it has an older firmware on it, we can help you upgrade the firmware on the UPS to adjust any issues with the fan.

yes, it will be unless the internal temperature still needs to be cooled down for one reason or another - such as the UPS transfers to battery, etc

on some of the older firmwares, which may be fixed by an upgrade if you get one for some reason, the fan was on low all of the time i think. newer firmwares have changed that functionality.

the firmware revision is listed on the LCD menu on the front of the UPS under the about menu. we do updates every several months and we have a procedure that we can send you via tech support once we have verified your unit requires it. i am not sure what the latest version is as of today unfortunately. the upgrade procedure will be done via hyperterminal/XMODEM.

in the future, it will also be upgradeable via a UPS Network Management Card.

you will need a windows computer with hyperterminal or a different program that supports the XMODEM protocol for file transfer. it is a way of transferring files via a serial connection - i mainly only use windows but i am sure that linux or Mac OS has another program that supports it.

Hi,
in APC site there isn't notice of a new firmware for APC SMT1000I UPS.
Are you sure about firmaware upgrade for this UPS?
The operator of Italian technical customer service said to me he didn't know a new firmware for SMT1000I UPS.
Thanks.

Thank you for reply.

Another question for you please.
Some user said the cooling fan to run also after power cord unpluging.
Are simply rumors, or not?
Into manual the on/off button presence is specified.
If the previous described behaviour is true, what's the functionality of the on/off button?

These inquiries may seem expectable, but the price of SMART-UPS is anything but low,
so I would like to resolve any doubt before to buy it.

Thanks
Giuseppe

its not rumors, SmartUPS aren't so smart for home use, this is why I bought the Back-UPS RS series instead of the Smart one.

Excuse me if I abuse of your helpfulness, mr. Rob.

I would like an official confirmation if UPS cooling fan runs also after UPS power cord unpluging.

If I want to use the unit like a excellent UPS for workstation and other devices sensitive to power wave form, I need to swicth off UPS and all connected equipment after completing my job.
A runing fan, after UPS power cord unplugging, discharges UPS batteries, increasing their cycles number and consequently reducing their life time.

I would buy the UPS for this pourpose.

Many thanks.
Giuseppe
