shutdown procedure - when is the power off for the outlet triggered ?

Hi,

we have a new SRT 3000 XLI with NMC AP9630 and Firmware UPS 05.3.
Currently i'm testing. We have several server with PCNS 4.2
If i understand everything right, the time when the server shutdown is configured in PCNS, not in the UPS.
My idea is to keep the server going for 10 minutes, then shutdown them. For the shutdown i'd like to have enough time, if a service does not stop immediately or the umount of a fs takes some time (server are Linux systems).
Let's say 15 minutes. After these 15 minutes i want that the ups switches off the outlet groups.
But when is the switch off of the outlet group triggered ? When the "Low battery duration" is reached ?
What is if i have a power off delay for an outlet group configured ?
Is that the same as the "Low Battery duration", or does the low battery duration triggers the power off delay for the outlet group and then it needs again the time configured for the power off delay ?
And what is the "Basic  low battery duration" ? Is that relevant if i have PCNS ?

Thanks.

Bernd

Hi Bill,

thanks for your message. It's working now. I choosed to start from the end. I configured "Low Battery Duration" with 20 minutes, now UPS will shutdown the servers when only 20 minutes of runtime are left. That does work properly, and also the outlets are turned off 20 minutes after beginn of shutdown.
I'm testing now if my server (HP Proliant ML 350) will boot automatically when the outlets are turned on again.

Bernd

HI,

It can be done in either PCNS or the NMC since they UPS has switched outlet groups.

You can do this in PCNS by selecting Configure Events - UPS on Battery - Shutdown and set the delay to 600 seconds. After the UPS has run on battery for 10 minutes PCNS will command the OS down.

Let's say 15 minutes. After these 15 minutes i want that the ups switches off the outlet groups.

To have the outlet groups power off 15 minutes after the OS is commended down in PCNS under Shutdown Settings select Turn off UPS. Then in the NMC web interface set the outlet off delay to 900 seconds. When PCNS tell the OS to power down it will send a signal to the NMC to tell the UPS / outlet groups to power down. The outlet groups will wait the delay set and then cut power.

NOTE: The main outlet group will not begin the power down cycle until all of the switched outlet groups are off / power down. So if you set a power off delay of 900 seconds for the switched outlet groups and 900 seconds for the main the switched will count down the delay and power off. Then the main will count down the 900 second delay and power off so from the time that the power off command is received the main will wait 1800 seconds before powering down.

There is a way to get the main to power down at the same time as the switched. I would need to know what outlet group/s the PCNS clients are plugged into and how you would like the main to react before offering a recommendation.

Low battery duration and basic low battery duration are both explained in the NMC help file.

Low battery duration will trigger PCNS to command the OS down and trigger the outlet off delay count down. Basic low battery duration is not used by PCNS.

I don't have a main outlet.

I think that's not right. I tested it but the outlets weren't switched off after the delay.

It does not work. I configured the PCNS to shutdown the server after 5 minutes on battery. Following the log of the PCNS:

30.01.2019 18:20:49 Shutting down physical machine that PowerChute is running on.
30.01.2019 18:20:49 PowerChute is turning off UPS 10.35.23.113
30.01.2019 18:20:49 Shutdown process started. Linux will shut down soon.
30.01.2019 18:20:49 UPS critical event: On Battery.
30.01.2019 18:15:49 UPS has switched to battery power.

I choosed once "Turn off the UPS" and once "Turn off the UPS Outlet Group" in the settings of PCNS.
In both cases servers were shutdown after 5 minutes, and PCNS sent a signal to the UPS, but neither UPS nor Outlet Group switched off. What am i doing wrong ?
On Battery shutdown behaviour is configured the following way:
On-Battery Shutdown Behavior

Thanks for any hint.

Hi,

Did the NMC log receiving the shutdown command from the PCNS client? If so you should brain dead the UPS and then run the test again.

See Schneider Electric FAQ FA156611 for assistance with the brain dead procedure.
