server shut down, power and ups remained on?

Smart UPS 2200, the server it was connected to lost power, when I went to check it out, the server was off, the UPS was on, replace battery light was solid red, battery charge lights were all green- full charge. I powered the server back on, replace battery still red and full charge sitll showing on the UPS.

questions- why did the server lose power, and do the batteries actually need replacing?
Also, server not using powerchute, and the ups is about 6 years old with original batteries.

Thanks for the quick reply, I have ordered new batteries, I didn't notice a power flicker or anything that would cause it to go to battery, but it is definitely time to replace the batteries on it.

the battery likely needs replacement. typical life is 4 or 5 yrs. your server may have dropped if the UPS failed a self test (ie the UPS went to battery but no battery life remained - so the server dropped). Even though the battery is CHARGED all the way, its capacity is reduced over time until it needs replacement and the indicator illuminates.
