I have a unique but repeating problem ... home built computer running windows XP Pro, APCC UPS, 4GB memory using dual Intel processors on a Tyan motherboard, SCSI interface with RAID 0.
When I logon, the system goes through the startup and then automatically shuts down. The first time it happened, I ended up reinstalling Windows XP and upgrading to SP2. The system worked for about 2 weeks and is now doing the same thing all over again. Both times I got an error with executing pbeagent.exe. I have checked for viruses, spyware, registry errors, etc. Done just about everything, including checking the hardware. My latest thinking is that pbeagent is "signalling" the computer that the system needs to shutdown. Has anyone experienced this problem. Are there any suggestions on what I can do to see if this is, indeed, the problem? Would appreciate any help or suggestions.
Thanks in advance ...

I will check when I get home (I believe it is Smart UPS 1000) but the software version is 7.04. Is there a workaround I can do so that I can use the PC while I'm trying to determine the conflict? Any thoughts on what the conflict might be?
Thanks for the help ...

I would try booting the computer into safe mode. From safe mode I would try to uninstall any portions of the software through add/remove programs. If you receive any errors while doing this, I would then go into services (Start > Run > Services) and change the startup type of the two APC services listed to disabled. This way when the computer starts up, the software will not try to run and cause the conflict. Reboot the computer into normal mode and remove from add/remove programs. This should be a good start.

You've got to get the exact model number of the UPS from the bar code tag in the back and then get the exact part number off the APC serial cable. IF the UPS says something like SU1000 or SU1000NET, you should be using APC's cable part number 940-0024C or 940-1524C. If you're using a different cable, PowerChute may be shutting you down because of an issue with the configuration. I have seen instances where this will happen. If this is the case, simply disconnecting the serial cable should allow you to boot up without an issue.
If you then log into the APC software and go into the agent properties, check off the box to show advanced items and check the UPS communications page. What is it set to....smart or simple? Get back with that info as well as the UPS and cable info and I might be able to better help.
