how can i query status of the ups device from c++ program ?

hello, i need some help with the APC SMT750i . it is connected to a standard PC which is part of a machine. PowerChute is installed and working. But i need to query the status of the ups from another program which is c++ and if the power fails than to move some part in the machine. can i use the serial rs232 cable connector (COM1) to send a query to the ups? and if so do i have to use the modbus protocol and how is the appropriate command ? i have tried sending different commands to the ups but i dont get a response so far. thank u for help

Here is the Application Note we have on Modbus support -> http://www.apc.com/whitepaper/?an=176

If you want to talk to the UPS via the serial port protocol, Modbus is the option we openly provide.

Or, you could script somehow against PowerChute but I am not sure how that'd be done..
