can't web login to AP8841

I have an AP8841. When I attempt to access web console, I get message

ERROR: The application was not able to load
You are attempting to access an APC device.
There was a problem loading the application. please login to telnet for more details.

So I telnet into the device. It's not obvious what's wrong.
Other threads in this forum suggest maybe firmware needs updating. However it looks like I have latest stuff. About gives me this:

I'm also confused because this was working fine when we first got the unit, and we've made no firmware upgrades or other changes to the unit.

eventlog gives the following response:

E100: Command Failed
Event Log Not Available

I only have access to this system from a linux box. Was there some way that I can update firmware images simply by ftp'ing them to the IP address or something like that?

I ftp'd the apc_hw05_aos_512.bin file to the PDU and I believe it accepted it, because it closed the ftp and when I logged in again it said uptime of 1 minute.
Also the status has changed from A$ to A- Still can't get in via web and eventlog is still unavailable.
