Work-aroud for PowerChute's lack of support for TLS / SSL / fixed SMTP port number?

Folks:

I've run into a problem that is affecting some of my small business installations.

The outbound mail port in PowerChute can not be altered and is apparently hardcoded to port 25

See this thread for details:  Changing default SMTP port in PowerChute V9.1.0 agent?

Since most e-mail providers now require the use of TLS or SSL for authentication of out-bound email,

and these services do not use port 25 I've got a problem supporting some customers as I can't get e-mail alerts sent.

(even if TLS / SSL did work on port 25 PowerChute might not support the handshake so I might still be in the ditch... anyway...)

So my question:  Has anyone found a work-around for this problem?

I am told that it might be possible to set the SMTP server to an alternate server that GMail has on line:

SMTP server: gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.

Apparently this server runs on port 25, does not require TLS/SSL and allows sending messages to a Gmail address, but not to any others. I'm traveling this week, but will attempt to test this possible solution when I get back to home base and post the result. In the mean time I'm wondering if anyone else has found a solution?

I know I replied to this but I don't see my reply...

You didn't see it, did you? Regarding using mail relay or using AP9630/31 as an immediate solution or waiting for PowerChute to support this?

Hey Angela!

I had another thread going that I think you did reply to on similar topic.

I started this one so as to put the mail issue in the thread title.

My customers are all SOHO type folks and the expense and added complexity is something I wanted to try to avoid.

I'm going to give the alternate GMail server a go and report back on results tonight or tomorrow!

Thanks for your help!

Jim
