Windows 7 Pro desktop with SUA2200RM

Hi, I have a Windows 7 Pro desktop connected to a SUA2200RM UPS with an APC smart serial cable 940-0024. I installed the Powerchute Business Edition Agent (only) Single node which came with the UPS (no Server section and no Console) and it went very smoothly but I was surprized to see afterward that (apparently) I can only access the interface to set my options and check status via The Web/Cloud.

Is this normal? Seems Odd to me. I'd much rather be able to set my options and see status on my screen directly with info from the smart cable without having to go on the Internet. If this is normal for the business edition is there a different Powerchute edition that will work with this UPS - like Personal Edition perhaps?

I have only one desktop and one UPS and there is no network. What do you recommend for the most simple setup with as few bells and whistles as possible.  Also I'd be just as happy if, in a power failure, the computer was simply shut down (not hibernated) and stayed off even when mains power is restored.

Later on, I would also like to connect a second desktop to the same UPS perhaps using the AP9607 interface expander and a simple signal cable. Will this work?

I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thank you

Alan,

PowerChute runs a web service on your computer. It is similar to the applications that are used to host web sites but it is restricted to PowerChute. A simple why to verify this is to disconnect your computer from your home / work network. Launch your favorite web browser and type in this address https://127.0.0.1:6547 You may see a message that state the site is not safe just ignore that and continue to the site. You will be able to log into the PowerChute Agent.

BTW: the address 127.0.0.1 is an internal IP address used by computers. If you would like more info on 127.0.0.1 please check out this link.http://www.howtogeek.com/126304/why-is-the-localhost-ip-127.0.0.1/

Alan,

When connecting to the PowerChute Agent via Internet Explore, Firefox etc you are not connection to the internet. PowerChute is running as a web application on the computer itself. There is no connection to the web unless your computers network is open to the web.

To answer the second question, yes, you can use the AP9607 with the SUA to connect a second system.

Thankyou for your reply Bill but I don't see how that can be so. Can you please explain? This is a web application (only slightly different from a web site) and as I understand it, data is going back and forth between my computer and APC's server. If I unplug my Internet modem, its not going to communicate.

The reason for my concern of course is that 75% of all hacking attacks are carried out via web apps.

thanks,

Alan

i'm pretty sure that your browser is talking to a web server running on your computer as part of the PowerChute install. APC does offer remote monitoring for some products, but I believe that is an extra-cost option.

I would expect (but don't know for sure) that the web server is restricted to either the PC it is running on, or the local LAN only (in other words, it doesn't respond to requests from the "outside world").
