Want computer to shut down, but UPS to stay on (for phone/wifi) upon power loss: Configs or Hacks

When power fails, I would like my computer to shut down immediately but I would like my UPS to stay on so as to maintain power to my answering machine and wifi modem.

I have an SUA1000 Smart UPS. I'm communicating over the USB port, using PowerChute Business Edition 9.1.1.

Is what I want to do possible with this combination?

If not, can it be done with this hardware setup and different software?

Could it be done if I add a network card to the SUA1000?

Is there a different APC product line that would support this?

Hi,

With PowerChute Business Edition and SUA1000 the UPS is powered down after the OS goes down to A - preserve battery power and B - to allow the OS to be restarted automatically when AC is restored. Your options are

1 - Install network management card and utilize PowerChute Network Shutdown.

2 - Purchase SMT1000 that allow for outlet group configuration i.e outlet group 1 powers down, outlet group 2 stays powered.

3 - Depending on the OS you can uninstall PowerChute and utilize native power options.

4 - Depending on the OS you can uninstall PowerChute and utilize APCUPSD .

Wow, thank you for the quick and thorough response!

I was half expecting APC to let me know I'd had a response to my question: maybe they did and I missed it. Figured I'd better double check.

I'll probably try each of those methods at some point (the SMT option will probably have to wait until one falls into my lap.)

For the moment I dug up an old BackUPS with some battery life left in it to power the comm stack.
