UPS settings or Powerchute settings?

Hi there

I see a lot of help on these forums but haven't been able to find the answer I'm looking for. Sorry if it is somewhere and I haven't found it.
We got a client with a RT3000 with AP9617. I installed Powerchute Network Shutdown on the server to test. What I'm confused about is that if I log into the management card, I can set settings for times to send shutdown signals etc. And then when I log into the PowerChute window, I can also set shutdown events, etc. So let me see if I got this right.....
I set the UPS of when to send the shutdown signal (e.g. 10min before battery depleted).
At that point, with 10 min left, the UPS sends the signal to the servers to shut down.
The powerchute server receives the signal and checks its events.
If the event for battery discharged is set to shutdown, it does so. If the event is set to not shut down, it won't even though the UPS is sending the shutdown command.
Is that right?
I'm just a bit confused as to why there are settings on both sides.

Thanks
Alan

Alan,

UPS: Battery Discharged is a completely different event with a completely different action. What you're looking at is the Low-Battery Duration, or what's commonly called the low battery signal time. With that much runtime remaining (we'll keep at your example of 10 minutes), the UPS sends a low battery signal to all the machines connected, stating to shutdown. Each PCNS client receives the shutdown command and begins a shutdown on itself. The UPS then begins its shutdown process if there is one configured on the NMC.

I'm not sure there's a clarity of what the low battery signal is.

It's not an event within PCNS that can be configured for shutdown. Battery discharged is something that results from a failed self-test. That can be configured for a shutdown.

When the UPS reaches a low battery state (when runtime remaining = low battery duration) it will send out a shutdown command. This supercedes any shutdown setup that's already configured, as it's basically a "point of no return" for the PCNS client to shutdown gracefully or wind up having power cut to it.

Not sure if that clarifies it enough or not, please let me know.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Sorry, that was bad wording from my side. I meant the low battery signal.

But what I'm confused about is when the low battery signal gets sent out, and the PowerChute software receives it, will it shut the pc down irrespective of the settings in PowerChute, or only if the event in Powerchute is set to shutdown?
