UPS not detected via USB - PCBE

Hi, my device (SMT1000) shows up under batteries in device manager and shows up in the devices/printers control panel but PCBE cannot detect the device via USB.  Have gone through ensuring that drivers are updated (HID -> APC), tested other USB ports, tested with other USB cables but no progress.  Also used USBterm.exe and the unit shows up just fine.  Any help would be appreciated.  Running Server 2008R2 and replaced the battery in the APC unit a couple of days ago.  Thanks.

Thanks Bill.  Unfortunately the issue still remains after performing the recommended steps.  Any other ideas?

Thank you.

Hi,

Go to Device Manager in the Control Panel and select Batteries. Click on HID UPS Battery or APC UPS which ever is displayed and select uninstall. Once the driver has uninstall disconnect the USB cable attached to the UPS and wait 30 seconds. After the delay reattach the USB cable. At that point the APC UPS driver should load.

You should see APC UPS in Batteries and American Power Conversion USB UPS in Human Interface Devices.

Once those ar both displayed run the PowerChute installer.

Had a similar problem with PCP when "American Power Conversion USB UPS" had gone AWOL. All the steps above were performed with no difference.

The cause was installing apcupsd without removing PCP first. After apcupsd was installed (excellent manual btw), and restarting, Windows 22H2 (or something else) removed the "American Power Conversion USB UPS" entry in DM altogether, yet both APC and apcupsd driver were still present. Uninstalling apcusd through Installed Apps emitted no errors, but checking the driver folders and registry, it was a different story.

In short, the driver files might have been misconfigured, so navigated to C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository and removed

apcups.inf_amd64_bea1b5a2ba50a0f7 (and apcupsd.inf_amd64_6113c80c771e48cd).

If the reader wants to do this, note that before attempting any deletion, change the ownership of the apcups.inf_amd64_bea1b5a2ba50a0f7 folder by right clicking Properties/Security/Advanced/Change (up the top) to one with access, like "Everyone", or "Administrators". Then, in Advanced, below permission entries, click "Add" to add that new owner as a principal.

Run RegEdit, and navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\DriverDatabase\DriverInfFiles\oem33.inf\apcupsd.inf_amd64_6113c80c771e48cd (possibly apcups.inf_amd64_bea1b5a2ba50a0f7), and as above, change the ownership and principal before removing the key and subkeys.

Do the same with the folders in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\DriverDatabase\DriverPackages.

Reconnecting the USB cable to the UPS or refreshing Device manager gets the device back.

Alternatively, some reputable OEM driver cleaners could do even a better job in less time.
