UPS: In temporary bypass.

Hi All,

I have a Symetra LX 16000 and tonight I got the following event that occurred and disappeared within seconds:

10/04/202220:24:32UPS: Returned from temporary bypass.
10/04/202220:24:24UPS: In temporary bypass.

I'm looking at the logs and I don't see any reason why the UPS decided to go into "temporary bypass"  There are no alarms and the UPS is OnLine.   The UPS is lightly loaded:

Measurements
Last Battery Transfer: Due to software command or UPS's test control
Internal Temperature: 36.0°C
Runtime Remaining: 7hr 20min

Input Power
 Phase L1Phase L2Phase L1/L2
Input Voltage121.1 VAC121.1 VAC209.5 VAC @ 59.99Hz

Output Power
 Phase L1Phase L2Phase L1/L2
Output Voltage121.1 VAC120.2 VAC211.3 VAC @ 59.98Hz
Output Current09.4 Amps13.4 Amps---
Output Load kVA01.13 kVA01.68 kVA---
Output Watts at n+0015 %Watts026 %Watts---
Output VA at n+0012 %VA018 %VA---

Fault Tolerance
Redundancy: n+3
Present kVA Capacity: 16.0 kVA

As you can see the UPS is very lightly loaded.  Yes there is an imbalance between the two phases but it's not much of an imbalance.   When I dug into the logs I don't see any reason why the UPS would have done this during this time frame:

Date Time Vmin1 Vmin2 Vmax1 Vmax2 Vout1 Vout2 Iout1 Iout2 %Wout1 %Wout2 kVAout1 kVAout2 %VAout1 %VAout2 Freq %Cap Vbat TupsC T1ambC %Hum1 T2ambC %Hum2

If someone could directly to information regarding this event it would be appreciated...

Cheers

Jason

Hi @JasonNaughton

Thank you for reaching out to the SE Community, my name is Jon and I will assist you with this query.  I am sorry to hear about the issue that you are having.

From the PowerView/LCD of the UPS you'll be able to view what are the events that the UPS has captured.  You can press the ESC key and navigate to Diags > Faults and Diagnostics and also Logging > View Log.

Downloading the NMC log files can also help us further diagnose on what has happened on the UPS.

Status >> UPS >> Measurements >>Take a screen shot

Status >> UPS >> Power >> Take a screen shot

Status >> UPS >> Battery >> Main Frame >> Take a screen shot
Status >> UPS >> Battery >> XR1 / Battery Frame 2>> Take a screen shot
Status >> UPS >> Battery >> [View All Battery Raw Status Data] >> Take a screen shot

Status >> UPS >> Intelligence Modules >>Take a screen shot
Status >> UPS >> Intelligence Modules >> [View System Raw Status Data]

Kindly download the debug.tar from the NMC menu: About > Support > Generate Logs > Download

If you do not have access to the network management card, the same information can be gathered through the LCD and it would help if you can take photos of the RSDs.

  • Retrieve the Intelligence Module Raw Status Data (RSD) from the LCD by hitting the ESC key and then navigating to Intelligence Module.  Gather the FW version, SN, and Raw Status Data.
  • Retrieve the Power Module Raw Status Data (RSD) from the LCD by hitting the ESC key and then navigating to Power Module.  Gather the SN and Raw Status Data.
  • Retrieve the Battery Module Raw Status Data (RSD) from the LCD by hitting the ESC key and then navigating to Battery Module.  Gather the SN and Raw Status Data.

Please send the screenshots and the debug.tar to us through DM or by reaching out to the Technical Support team of your Country.

Hello Jon,

I've DM'd the images and log file to you.  Just so your aware, I've disconnected the 3rd and 4th Runtime frames and removed any batteries from the frames that were older than 2018.   I also re-seated the power modules as per a suggestion from Schneider.  These events will show up in the event log.

Cheers

Jason

Hi @JasonNaughton

With the screenshots that you have provided, it looks like the UPS had a hiccup, did it cause any service disruption?  I have also replied to your DM.

Hi Jon,

No there was no disruption thank goodness.  The temporary bypass only lasted 8 seconds and the line power was in place so there was no outage.  What concerned me was what caused the UPS to go into temporary bypass?   Thank goodness there was no power outage that just may have happened at the same time.

I have noticed that in Frame #2 there are negative signs in-front of the raw battery data.  Can you decipher what this means?   I reached out to Schneider to attempt to diagnose the possible issue.    They suggested pulling any of the batteries that were older than 2016.   Disconnecting the XR frames that no longer had batteries in them, and to reseat each power module.   I did all of that but I’m not sure any of that may have resolved whatever issue caused the UPS to put itself into bypass.

Hi @JasonNaughton

You can disregard the negative (-) sign on the RSDs, I have sent you an invite to where you can upload the debug file.  From the LCD, you can also go to fault and diagnostics and logs to review the events.
