UPS Compatability - SUA750 -vs- SMT750 w/AP9630 card

FOREVER we have been using the SUA750 UPS with the AP9630 management cards and they work great.
The last few years we have been buying the SMT750 UPS and still using the AP9630 management cards.

If I have a UPS (SUA750) physically die and I replace it with a SMT750 and reuse the AP9630 card, it works but when you look at it with a serial cable, it shows nothing for the IP address. If you look at it with the web browser it say no UPS found. - HELP!

Do I need to use a different management card? Does the SMT750 have to be powered down before inserting the management card? The SUA750 was always hot swappable.

Please advise- Thanks

OK I have no problem updating them. Can you point me to the correct file to update with and any instructions on how to do it, please?
I'll have to update them out of the box from now on.

This has to do with the UPS or the management card? - Just want to know if I have to install the card frst or I can do it with the UPS out of the box?
Thanks again!

Kinda answering my own question but I would appreciate comments.

I called APC's tech support line and they said I can not hot swap the SMT750 UPS - have to brain dead it to get it to see the AP9630 card properly, unlike the SUA750.

Sound right to everyone out there?
Thanks

i also just wanted to put my two cents in and note that i agree with voidstar. the official procedure is to braindead these smaller UPSs to install or uninstall a network management card. i haven't done that in years and the chances are very slim that anything would occur.

Nothing's changed there. Officially, smartslot cards have never been hot swappable. That applies to both the SUA750 and SMT750. They weren't designed with hot-swapping as a design requirement and it may cause the UPS to drop the load.

Unofficially, chances of a problem from hot-swapping are slim. I do a lot of hot-swapping (including with the newer models) and I've never experienced a problem. But obviously I can't guarantee it.

Make sure you use the "netstat" command to find the IP address.

If it can't communicate with the UPS, then you may need to update the card to a newer firmware. You can find the latest (SUMX517 at time of writing) here.

Gotcha thanks. Yeah no one ever said it could not be hot installed so that is what I have always done.
Good to know that the SMT750 has to be shut down first.

Let me ask this - if I hot install a pre-programmed card into a SMT750, can I 'brain dead' it, bring it back up with the card in it, and it'll find it ok?
Just trying to feel out my options. I have some SMT750's installed in critical locations that can not be turned off.

Thanks again!

If you hot install a card with the latest firmware into an SMT750, it should find it okay without "brain dead"ing it. If the firmware on the card is too old (or the wrong firmware) for the UPS, then you can remotely update it over the network and the card will automatically reboot and find the UPS.

Thanks for the reply Voidstar. have never updated the firmware on the cards before. Afraid to have it shut down the UPS, which I can not do at most of my locations.

Will look into it.

Updating the network management card firmware only affects the card. The UPS will continue operating normally and isn't involved in the upgrade. The upgrade is designed to be safe, so if it fails for any reason such as a network outage, you can repeat the procedure.

I just installed a SMT750 fresh out of the box. Preinstalled a AP9630 management card into it before powering it up. Got to my install location, patched in my data cable, powered everything up and enabled DHCP and disabled cookies. Rebooted and after about 2 minutes it picked up an IP address. Today I use a web browser to get into the device, which I did but it shows "NO UPS" - any thoughts?

yes, could you please web in and go to administration->General->About and tell us the firmware revisions in there please? you should see a version for the AOS and Application and they should be something like 5.1.5 - meaning similar numbers/format.

basically, if it is 5.0.X, you'll need to update it. i am thinking the NMC has an older firmware revision that did not support these newer UPS models. if that is the case, we can just update it to 5.1.7 and you'll be all set.
