02/03/2009 16:45:24 Switched Rack PDU: Communications lost.
This is the error I am recieving after resolving an issue with the AP7940s in our lab being unable to ping the default gateway because of a faulty machine spamming SNMP packets and causing all the APCs in our lab to reboot almost every 5 minutes. That is the background anyway.
Now I have a new problem. About 9 AP7940 are stuck with a "Er" on the LED display and logging into the web portal shows this same error, Communication has been lost to the device.
How would I resolve this without having to completly power cycle the APC itself. While power cycling seems to have resolved this before, the machines are important and can not lose power right now.

I was hoping to avoid that if at all possible.
There may not be downtime anytime soon to try this so it will be some time til I respond and see if a complete power cycle resolves the issue.

Have you tried hitting the reset button (use a paperclip, near the power display)? Just a thought.

yeah he has, that would only cause a warmstart but you can certainly try it.

one suggestion is to try rebooting the management interface. this would be a warm start though and may not be effective but its worth a try and wont disrupt power to the outlets.
to do this on 3.x versions of rPDU firmware - go to the Administration Tab->General->Reset/Reboot->Reboot Management Interface.

i came across the email incident you had submitted as well and it seems like you have already tried to reset this to defaults and have done a couple of other things which have already should have caused the rPDU to do a warmstart and reboot the management interface that i suggested.
it seems strange that you have multiple PDUs showing this problem at the same time too..
unfortunately, i dont think there is really anything else at this point we can try besides powercycling the PDU to see if it clears up. π
