We deployed several of these recently, and it seems there are far too many duplicated alarms, similar to these:
Critical - UPS: The battery power is too low to support the load; if power fails, the UPS will be shut down immediately.
Informational - UPS: A discharged battery condition no longer exists
This goes on for about 5-6 minutes, repeating the same messages over and over, and then stops. Sometimes a few minutes go by then it goes around and around again. It's driving the Help Desk crazy.
Imagine this sort of alerting but from 5 different sites.
So - is there any way to throttle these so the alert intervals can be extended and thereby reducing the sheer volume of emails?

yes, we can do that. it sounds like you are using a network management card. i think i'd like to ask first if you could provide your log files so we can silence the alarms but also solve why those messages are coming up.
i'd like to see if you can provide event.txt, data.txt, and config.ini via these instructions -> http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9321
as for the messages, when you add a receipient, it is enabled for all alerts every two mins until the condition clears - to let you know theres an issue rather than nothing happening. if you'd like to change this, you can go to the Administration tab in the web UI->Notification->By event or by group.
if you want to just turn off all events to start with or turn down the notifications, let's start with Administration->General->Notification->By Group and select informational, warning, critical, groups by severity. then press next and choose email recipients, and then select which one's notification frequency you wanted to modify. or choose the radio button for Disable notifications. please note that this same screen is not the one you should use to check your configuration after, if that's confusing enough 🙂 - you'll need to go to Notification->by event and click on an event and drill in to see if its enabled or not. let me know if you need a screenshot or something.
