Smart UPS SC 420 DB9 to USB (Linux/NUT) solution

Hello.

I have an APC Smart-UPS SC 420 with DB9 communications connector and serial cable P/N: 940-0024D. I would like to use this UPS for my Synology NAS which has USB ports only. It's a linux based NAS using Network UPS Tools (NUT) for UPS management.

1. Is there any DB9 to USB cable exists for this UPS in order to be able to connect to my NAS?

2. If there is, how should I configure NUT in order to work with this cable?

I have attached a photo from the backplate of my UPS if it helps.

Thank you,

Balazs

@Anonymous user

The RJ45 ports on the SC420 are for modem/fax/DSL/10-100 base-T surge protection. The ports are not designed for communications with the UPS.

I have attached the SC420 User's Guide. The ports are listed on pages nine and ten.

Hi,

We do not manufacture a specific cable however there are many USB to serial conversion cable available. If you do a web search you should find a vendor of your choice.

As for compatibility with Synology you should contact them to see if they have a recommended USB to serial cable.

From my experience, you cannot connect USB-DB9 cable directly into the UPS, USB-DB9 cable only provide COM port for your PC/Laptop when no COM port available on your PC/Laptop. In order to communicate with the UPS you still need DB9 male-female cable (in my case the cable was 940-0024D). I've tried work hard when I only have USB-DB9 cable, I thought that my cable was bad, or UPS serial was damaged since I'm unable to SSH into my UPS. but then I've got spare 940-0024D cable and connect the cable between USB-DB9 and UPS, now I can access the UPS from Powerchute.

But the issue with SSH (Putty) still exists, I'm unable to enter the UPS using SSH and configure the RJ45 network line, the documentation is so minimum and I don't know if the UPS support communication via RJ45 and network router.
