Please advise on config and software to drive APC Smart-UPS SC 1500 from an Intel xServe running Mac OS Server 10.4.10. I have tried using the USB/Serial converter cable, but the xServe will not detect it at this point.

Hello,
We do not support Mac OSX with the SC1000/1500 units do to our use of a USB adapter cable rather than a true USB port on the UPS itself. Although not officially tested or supported you may be able to get communications by installing a third party driver.
1) Connect the SC unit to the MAC with the provided USB adapter
2) Download the OSX drivers from Prolific Technologies, here:
http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31
3) Reboot the Mac
4) Install Personal Edition. OSX Native Support will not recognize this configuration.
5) Within Personal Edition there will now be a dropdown box for "Port". Choose "USB/SERIAL ADAPTER"
6) You should now have communications with the UPS.

What USB-serial translator are you using? I had trouble with a cheap one off eBay, but when I got a Belkin translator, everything worked great. Unfortunately, Belkin doesn't make one that works with OS X.
http://www.keyspan.com/products/homepage.2.productList.Serial.spml is quite expensive, but they have OS X support. Ask if it will work with Mac OS server.
