I have a Smart UPS 1000 that I have been using happily for years. I seem to remember that the setup was very easy. Not this time!
I have just changed out the server for a new one.
I have connected everything as before, but I can't get the communication to work.
I have installed NUT using Yast2 and entered the configuration in the various files.
I think the only important thing is the ups.conf which contains this:
[apc_smartups_1000]
driver = apcsmart
port = /dev/ttyS0
desc = "APC SmartUPS 1000"
When I issue rcupsd start I get the following:
Starting NUT UPS drivers done
Starting NUT UPS server done
Broadcast Message from upsd@Dell
(somewhere) at 21:11 ...
Communications with UPS apc_smartups_1000@localhost lost
done
I've also tried the generic driver with both types 1 and 2, but I get the same result.
I tried changing ups.conf to refer to ttyS1 instead of ttyS0 in case I had the wrong port, but that led to the driver failing to load at all.
I've been trawling the web and also this forum, but I can't seem to find any more ideas.
Please help !

Thanks for the answer, but I have just found the solution:
its called apcupsd
I found that was what I had installed previously.
I went to yast and asked for that and it said it had to get rid of nut
I said fine.
It finished.
I went to the runlevel editor and told it to start apcupsd and to always start it and that was it.
It works.
I didn't even have to configure anything
It did it all itself

Well, we at APC don't do technical support on NUT or anything short of our PowerChute software...so I would imagine information on this issue would be hard to find on our forums. Have you checked google, I assume? There seems to be some info out there on communication issues with various UPS manufacturers.
Your UPS.conf file was not linked correctly, btw. Have you ever swapped from serial to USB on this unit? I assume this is a server/3rd party software issue since your last server with this UPS worked fine.
Maybe one of our other customers that has experience with NUT can assist?
Edit: Can you hook it up to a Windows box for a quick hyperterminal verification so we know the UPS still comms fine on serial? Or has that been verified already? Also what port settings are you using?
