I have tested four different Smart-UPS 3000 units, and all of them automatically turn off if you plug in a regular serial cable in the unit. Unfortunately I had to learn the hard way... I did not have the serial cable that came with the UPS at hand, so I plugged in a regular serial cable, and the UPS unit that was currently in production turned off, causing severe data loss on some of my servers. It is unbelievable that a company like APC will place a tag on the port that says "Serial Port" but it doesn't give you any warnings that if you plug in any serial cable that's not the one that came with the unit, it will shut off. I'm very disappointed with this product.

what UPS model do you have specifically? it should be on a sticker on the back of the UPS.
sounds like a Smart UPS RT 3000?

Hi,
I am sorry for the inconvenience on this issue. I will certainly note this on our end with the appropriate team as far as the label/sticker goes on the actual serial port on the back of the UPS because that is a good idea. I was under the impression, some of them had labels over them when you buy them but they can be ripped off of course. Since they have a special pinout, that is what causes the UPSs to shutdown.
Although, it is noted in the manual (see attached screenshot).
I am assuming you have the tower model, but it is the same idea. Here is the link to the [SUA3000 manual|http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/ASTE-6YWRZE_R0_EN.pdf].

2 years later...I learned the same lesson. Luckily I was not in production yet.
Also, way to go with USB design....it does not look like RJ45 at all.
Anyhow...thanks for posting this, it saved some of my sanity.

Guys-
Same thing happened to me. We plugged in a regular cable and it turned off our whole EDM; thankfully it wasn't operational yet or something bad would have happened!
BUT we wanted to make sure that's what did it so we plugged it in again after powering everything back up. NOW we have a fault light and the bottom and middle battery LEDs illuminated. Great. Now I can't meet my service window....can anyone help?? This thing is brand new!
Tad
