Smart UPS 1000 RM batteries show signs of melting bubbling

A few days ago my Smart UPS 1000RM (the unit was purchased in January of 2008 and installed at that time) indicated that the batteries (original) needed to be replaced, I ordered new batteries and went to replace them yesterday. After struggling to get the old batteries out, I noticed that two of the four batteries show signs of melting and/or bubbling. This was the reason as to why the batteries simply didn't slide out. I have a few questions regarding this.

Why wasn't I notified before this point? All of my units are monitored by the Powerchute Business deluxe edition software package.

What is the worse case scenario regarding these batteries?

Is there a battery life limit regardless of operating condition?

I have around 20 additional Smart UPS APC units which include various models (bigger and smaller) should I be physically checking the conditions of those batteries?

Thank you in advance for any comments regarding this.

"That just tells you Syracuse wasn't that Griffey Shoes good," Barkley retorted. There will probably be people Air Jordan Heels who agree with Barkley that only eight Big East teams belonged in the NCAA tournament Ken Griffey Shoes as a result of the conference's awful showing, but the truth is the league simply performed well below Air Max 24 7 expectations in single-elimination format. Based on their season-long body of work, it would have been very difficult to justify leaving Nike Air Yeezy out Connecticut, Villanova or Marquette, the teams that finished ninth, 10th and 11th in the Big East regular-season standings. Even Nike Dunk Heels though he had the more logical argument, Pitino didn't exactly help himself when he looked straight into the camera and guaranteed "Notre Dame will not lose" Sunday night against Florida State. The lesson here: Never pin your TV credibility to Notre Dame in the NCAA tournament and never argue with Barkley even when you're right.

I have seen many cases of those battery in apc unit and replaced them with new one and units continue to work normally,
first note that this problem is not caused by apc unit, here are some reason why battery bubble in this way:
the battery used inside apc unit are lead acid battery and it contain a little percent of acid, if the battery is heated than the acid will evaporate and need to go out of
the battery this way it will bubble.
there are 2 reason for battery heating:
first bad environmental, the room temperature is high ,or the battery are not ventilated properly.
second when battery ages it will be internally defected than it will not reach its floating charging voltage in the proper time ,for this reason the charger will take much more time charging the battery and some times will not stop, this will heat up the battery over time.
for this reason some fan of units will rotate more than the normal time.

to prevent this problem ventilate properly the units with good environmental ; and always calibrate the ups from powerchute software if you notice that runtime is very low after calibration this mean battery are bad and must be changed before it bubbles.

Jeffswan, when was the last time you did a runtime calibration with your old batteries? Probably never? If so then the self-tests having been lying to you for a while now, and capacity has been significantly less than what powerchute was reporting.

Don't worry about it, you learn to get used to the fact that self-testing is only good for testing the period of time the test actually runs, and is not a useful indicator of run-time for any longer than that.

,

Elec, the bulging can be from overcharging/overheating but also from sulfation of the lead oxide plates. The oxide forms pure crystals that don't dissolve when recharged, and the crystals grow bigger and bigger until they start touching plates together, shorting out a cell.

The crystals are capable of significant physical pressure on surrounding objects as they grow in size, and that is what makes the plastic case bulge out. Inside the plates are being pushed around and bent/damaged by the crystals.

It's just how it is with battery technology. Pure crystal formation affects pretty much all chemistry types, like NiCd.
