Silcon DP320E and AP9617 monitoring card

Hi all.

I've just replaced an incompatible AP9630 card with an AP9617 which I'm told is the right card for this UPS. Even that is a bit iffy since the page for the AP6017 says the AP6930 is its replacement... Anyway, I've configured it on the lan and am able to log in to it. However, when I access the monitoring page I get a message saying that it's not a recognised UPS and that I need an APP file.
I presume it's related to a firmware update for the card as I've found some other threads about similar issues but I can't even be sure I'm finding the right download page for the UPS as it's quite an old model and DP320E doesn't even seem to come up in searches. I've looked at the [download page for the AP6917|http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=AP9617&tab=software] card but there's an awful lot of stuff there and I'm not sure what if anything I need.

Any advice please?

sorry, i must have missed your previous response.

i just noticed, you are already at AOS 2.6.4 - why are you trying to put 2.0.2 on it? you should be attempting to put 3.7.3 on it. and yes the device account does not have permission to do this.

i found that this would happen to me and it was actually my VPN client service blocking me even though I was not using it at the time but the service was still active.

anyways, you can do it over Xmodem it will just be really slow. you'd send over AOS 3.7.3 then dp3e app 3.7.2.

directions for XMODEM should be in the same document i sent you if you want to try it but it still appears the FTP data port is blocked on the computers or network to me. πŸ˜•

hello,

AP9630 replaces AP9617 for all applications EXCEPT for your UPS since it has been discontinued for several years now.

You need the dp3e app.

Here is how to get it:

1.) Go here -> http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=AP9617&tab=software

2.) You want this file: SFDP3E372

3.) Refer to http://www.apc.com/site/support/index.cfm/faq/ and knowledge base FA156047 if you need help updating after you download the file.

Thanks for that. I tried updating over the lan but it complained after some time that it couldn't connect. I'm going to visit the site with a laptop and do it locally as I imagine there might be some vlan issue or firewalling going on.

Is it possible to save the old firmware off the card before updating? I've been asked to ensure a rollback plan is in place. πŸ™‚

i'd suggest just using the .bin files you extracted and trying FTP manually. i also wonder if it is possible that if on your computer, the FTP data port is blocked. i have had that issue before and the symptoms are that you can log in via FTP but any data transfers are blocked.

are you familiar with FTPing manually, such as with Windows command prompt?

instructions are here -> http://www.apc.com/site/support/index.cfm/faq/ -> search for FA156047 and follow NMC1 instructions for manual FTP.

Tried it manually, from a different network machine (a server which I know isn't firewalled), but with similar results.

C:\Temp\apc>ftp 10.67.2.18
Connected to 10.67.2.18.
+220 AP9617 Network Management Card AOS v2.6.4 FTP server ready.+
User (10.67.2.18:(none)): apc
+331 User name okay, need password.+
Password:

ftp> bin
+200 TYPE Command okay.+
ftp> put apc_hw02_aos_202.bin
+200 PORT Command okay.+
+150 File status okay; about to open data connection.+

I left it and it stayed on that for 10 minutes. Resource monitor showed no traffic to the UPS from ftp or cmd. I aborted and had a look at the log on the UPS and that seems to confirm it failed after a minute and a half (timeout period?).

+10/05/2012 13:28:35 System: FTP user 'apc' logged out from 10.6.20.88.+
+10/05/2012 13:20:07 System: File transfer failed.+
+10/05/2012 13:18:37 System: FTP user 'apc' logged in from 10.6.20.88.+

I tried changing to another port (5050 for the record) but that behaved the same way.

I also tried with the "device" account, but that didn't work either, although with a different error. I presume "device" doesn't have the rights to mess with the firmware. πŸ™‚

No other suggestions? Can I do the firmware update via the serial connection? I haven't tried that yet but I'm not sure if it's possible.

Right, had another attempt today. Login via serial, go to do the transfer, switch speeds to 38400, fail.
Try it again, same issue. After switching speeds it prompts me to start the transfer, I do so, and it quickly racks up 10 "unexpected response" errors then fails.
Tried at 2400, and it works, although of course it's going to take 2 hours to transfer the AOS. Cancel that.
Tried at 19200, fail.
Tried at 9600, works. OK, sure, 40 minutes but I'll live.

Came back 15 minutes later and it had quietly failed, no reason given. Aaaargh.

Tried again at 9600, this time it completes the transfer. Repeated the process with the dp3e app, another 55 minutes, success. Web interface takes 10 minutes to stop showing an error but eventually everything comes right, I can log in and I can see the UPS stats etc.

What a mission this was. Next time one of these cards has an issue I'll get the client to replace the whole UPS. πŸ˜›

Thanks picKed, you saved my bacon a number of times. πŸ˜„
