I have a SURTA2200RMXL2U UPS with 3 external batteries connected it
How many do I tell the UPS Manager batteries are connected?
the default is 1
Well, each external battery has 2 cassettes with 4 batteries in each a total of 8 batteries in each external battery.
The UPS has one cassette it contains 4 batteries.
So, is one cassette considered one battery?
should I tell that I have 7 batteries connected?
One inside the UPS and six externals
or is each external battery considered one battery then I should say I have 3.5 batteries connected?
3 externals and half in the UPS.

You would enter 3 into the system.

Actually you would enter 4. The default is one because of the way APC calculates batteries. The internal batteries of the UPS is 1. They are wired 2 parallel circuits with 2 batteries in each circuit wired in series. Each of the battery backs has two cassette and they are wired in a way to make them and extension of each of the aforementioned parallel circuits. That extend their series circuits into more batteries. Which is why each battery pack as two cassettes. APC has taken that into consideration or its runtime calculations.
So the internal batteries are 1 "pack" and each eternal battery tower is 1. since you have 3 eternal battery towers (Or packs as most people call them) then the total is 4.
