Is the step down transformer permanently attached to the main unit on this particular item. The reason for asking to ease in lifting the unit for installation

No, its not physically attached. I assume the actual SKU you're referring to is SURT6KRMXL3U-TF5 or similar in regards to having a -XXXX at the end of SURT6KRMXL3U. For instance, SURT6KRMXL3U-TF5 comes with an AP9626 in one box and SURT6000RMXLT3U in another.
