I recently inherited a SUA1000 unit (the idiots-that-be at my school decided to throw it away rather than buy new batteries). I’ve got a new battery ordered and on the way, but in the meantime, I’ve a question about its behavior that the manual and online FAQ doesn’t seem to address:
I plugged it in, and at first got no response from the unit whatsoever. This didn’t surprise me, as I know it had been sitting unplugged for about a year and had no charge on the battery at all. But after about an hour, the unit began to chirp. ALL of the lights on the front panel will flash at each chirp, but no single light will stay lit. At first, it happened for a few seconds, then stopped. Over the next thirty minutes, the chirping/flashing became more frequent, and the periods of silence between shorter. Now, it's constant. The chirps and flash come at about 4 second intervals, and pushing the OFF button does not stifle them.
What is this indicating? It doesn’t sound like the description of the standard “dead battery” audible alarm, especially since the dead battery light isn’t staying lit. Is this indicating some damage or fault? Or is it just that the battery is really, really dead?
Thanks in advance for any advice,
Ron
EDIT: Sorry, forgot to indicate that the unit is not under load, and currently has nothing connected to it at all.

unfortunately, this condition indicates an internal UPS fault and is not a normal condition or indicator. you can try to braindead the UPS to see if it clears but if it continously comes back, then the UPS is probably no good.
to braindead, remove the UPS from AC power, so unplug it from the wall, and turn it off. then hold down the (o) off button and wait until you hear a click/the LEDs on the front panel flash quickly. alternatively, you can let unplug the UPS and turn it off and wait about 10 minutes for this to occur on its own or remove the battery after turning it off.
hope that helps.
