SUA 1000I, Powerchute Business Edition Linux 64bit?

Hi everyone

Just got around to setting up our Smart UPS on a test machine and the software installation was easy enough.
Everything appears to be working ok with the serial connection.
I'm running Xen on that particular machine so had to set xencons=off in Grub menu.lst to take control of the serial port but that's all fine.

However I'm planning to run this on a CentOS 5.4 64bit box but I can't seem to find any 64bit versions of Powerchute Business Edition for Linux on the CD or from the download section.

Does a 64bit edition of the software exist?

Cheers, B

Forgive me if this is a silly question because I'm a newbie here. Am i understanding this correctly? You were able to get the Business Edition product to communicate via serial cable with a Xen server? Because the people I've spoken to at APC have all told me this is not possible.

We'd like to do this and get our VM's to do graceful shutdowns followed by the Xen host afterward. Can this be done with scripted commands issued to the VM's, or to the Host to have the host shut down the VM's?

The "supported solution" I've been pitched is to put a network management card in the UPS and use PCNS (PowerChute Network Shutdown) with scripts. But those scripts would store passwords in the clear and my bosses don't like that idea. I'm trying to find away around it. I'm thinking that if I can find a way to use the Bus. Edition with serial cables I can store the scripts on a machine that isn't attached to the network and thus not possible to hack.

Alternately, and probably preferably, does anyone know a way to use the "supported solution" and not store passwords in the clear? For example, could the script call an outside file that stores the password encrypted, or something like that?

Thanks in advance for any input you have.

PowerChute Business Edition v8.0.1 supports Red Hat Enterprise, SUSE Linux, and Solaris operating systems on 64-bit platforms. We do not officially support any other Linux/Unix distributions with PCBE. There is a non-APC solution called APCUPSD that may work for you, but keep in mind APC is not liable for any failures caused by this software, nor do we provide support or configuration assistance for it.

No of course, completely understand. But since CentOS is bug-for-bug binary compatible with RedHat then in my experience it should work fine.

But I can't track down the 64bit RedHat version of PowerChute Business Edition v8.0.1 through the APC download section. All I can find is the 32bit version

Cheers, B

Anyone know where I can get the 64bit version of the software?
Or do I just have to make-do with the 32bit version from the CD/download page?

Cheers, B

Ben,

To the best of my knowledge the file that you can download from our Software Download page is compatible for both 32 and 64-bit Operating Systems. Just what Erasmus had said only the listed Operating Systems has been tested to run our application. Please take some time to view the [PowerChute Business Edition 8.0.1 Compatibility Chart|http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/ASTE-6Z5QEV_R14_EN.pdf] and if you want to download it please click here
