SMT18UPS_15-0.enc Firmware failed update process

Hello APC Community,

 

I’ve APC Smart-UPS series (specifically SMT "SMT2200RMI2UNC" models) and recently attempted a firmware update with the file SMT18UPS_15-0.enc. While I understand firmware updates are important for maintaining optimal performance, I’m concerned about the potential risks of update failures as I dont have specially spare units to replace all my UPS accross my 15 offices.

 

I’d like to ask the community:

  1. What is the typical failure rate for firmware updates on APC Smart-UPS devices?
  2. Are there any known best practices to minimize the risk of failure during the update process?
  3. In the event of a failed update, what recovery steps have worked best for you?

Understanding the general reliability of these updates and learning from others' experiences could help me (and others) approach this more confidently.

If the equipment is still under warranty all firmware should be guided live over the phone with APC Technical Support.

 

If the hardware is not under warranty you have a better than 50% chance of bricking a perfectly good working system! 🤦‍♂️

 

You need only scan this forum and the Internet to see the failures just this year.
