SMT1500 fan/firmware questions

I'm considering upgrading from a SUA1500 to a SMT1500 but am worried about the constantly running fan. I know that more recent firmwares are supposed to help, but I would like more details about the fan profiles. Does the fan ever turn off when plugged in? How quiet is it when running a ~300w load while plugged in?

Hello,

I checked on this for you. For all newer firmwares, the SMT1500 fan is always on at least 'low' speed as long as power is available. Only in the extremely older versions where there minor issues with it running on 'high' when it shouldn't have been. Keep in mind, 'high' mode is reserved for when needed such as maybe when UPS is running on battery, charging the battery, etc and 'low' is on all of the time to help keep your UPS cool during normal operation and to preserve battery life somewhat.

Also, we do not have ratings at particular loads for fan noise, only what is listed on the website (which I believe is the max): Audible noise at 1 meter from surface of unit - 45.00 dBA. Keep in mind this is a server class UPS so I don't think it is designed to be "super-duper" quiet since generally, it is installed in a data center type environment.

Let me know when you have any questions.
