Hi; I know there is a lot of topics about this and I also found the step by step procedure to reset the password, but I am stuck. I hope you can help me.
I have a Smart-UPS RT 5000 XL: APC RT5000 with a 9631 NMC. The person who handled the IT Infrastructure is no longer here and nobody knows the password, so I am trying to reset it following this procedure: http://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA156075/
I have the propietary cable, but as I don't have a serial port on my computer I have used NISUTA USB to Serial Conveter that emulates a serial port on COM3
I connect the cable to the NMC, I also disconnected the network cable from it.
I am able to connect with the cable at 9600,8,N,1,N as described, I am able to see the prompt for user id after hitting ENTER a couple of times.
Once there This is what I did/
I pressed the reset button once. Light went out.
I waited until it flashed green&orange
pressed button again, light went out.
Here comes the issue: once I hit ENTER again on Hyperterminal I got no reply from the NMC.
I tried hitting ENTER many many times, but it does not work either, I just can not move from there as there is no further answer from the NMC to hyperterminal.
I am able to do it all over again but it is always the same, I don't receive an answer after the second press on the reset button.
What else can I do?
Thanks.

Hi German,
I'll think through it in my head as I type this through you as I've done it many times.
I set up my terminal session, usually with HyperTerminal, verify I get the username/password prompt (which I don't know the password). Then, I get my paperclip and I press the pinhole reset button once, the status LED on the right (next to the checkmark and the X) goes off. I leave the paperclip held to the top of the hole (but the button isn't depressed) and wait. 5-7 seconds later, the status LED on the right alternates green and orange rapidly and I press the button a second time. The LED goes off. Immediately, I go back to the prompt on my PC and right away press enter on the keyboard once every 3-4 seconds. The prompt usually typically returns within 10-15 seconds where then I use apc for both username and password.

Hi German,
That sounds strange but it sounds like you're doing everything correctly too. You could try to format the NMC - this will wipe ALL settings, including TCP/IP. Resetting the password would retain all of that.
To format:
If this is being performed correctly, you should see the status LED "pulsing" green. When the process is actually complete, the status LED will change its color and "pulse" orange. This is when it is time to let go. The NMC will continue to "pulse" orange a few times and then the status LED will go off, and the NMC will reboot.
A common mistake here is that some users do not making contact with the reset button so it's recommended you hold the tool you use to press and hold the reset button is held against the top of the actual pinhole.

Thanks Angela. I would like to give it another try to the password wipe method before actually resetting everything.
Do you know how long should I wait for the answer from the NMC? I waited for about 1 minute as I missread the 30 seconds warning and I thought that was all the time I had, but it looks those 30 seconds count since I receive the prompt to login again.
Thanks.
