Remove jammed battery in 2200XL

The battery in a SmartUPS 2200XL has expanded and I cannot pull it out. What's the procedure for draining the battery, then breaking it apart so that I can remove it?

Hello Bill, I am sorry that you are experiencing this issue in your Smart Ups.

Typically, when battery swells like that it has reached EOL and needs to be replaced. We always recommend replacing the unit at that point, we cannot recommend opening the battery for any reason, because of the electrolyte and lead inside.

That being said that unit has been discontinued for many years, and I would replacing this unit with an SMT2200, or an SMX if you need to use external battery packs for additional runtime.

I've removed swollen batteries from most 48 and 96 VDC battery cages. I've never had one battery that "leaks" any liquid, but they will cause corrosion and adhesion to the cages due to the corrosion - can be quite a mess. You should not "break apart" any battery - too much risk of corrosive materials. My guess is that you will need to disassemble the entire battery area of the XL/ tower type UPS to the point that you can access the swollen battery and break it loose to remove it.
