Proper PCNS configuration for remote shutdown

Hi,

Here is my current setup:
- Smart UPS SMT1000RMI2U with AP9630 NMC(connected to the switch)
- client(windows) server with PCNS installed on it(connected to thw UPS with the USB cable, connected to the switch),
- two additional Linux servers(connected to the swithc)

All 3 servers, along with the switch, are connected to the UPS.

My idea is to first gracefully shutdown two Linux servers and then client(windows) one if UPS starts working on battery.
I have already created shell script for remote shutdown of those Linux servers and it's working as expected(if I manually execute it).

Now, I've added the script into PCNS Events to perform the shutdown if condition is met but what happens is that only client(windows) machine is being powered off and not the Linux servers.
I've tried to play with Power off delays for outlet groups, set outlet where Linux machines are plugged to have shorter delay, but again only the client server gets shut down.

I think that it is pretty much clear what I want to accomplish so what would be the right way to do it, what am I missing, to which outlets should I connect my Linux machines, ...?

Best regards!

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your reply, it really helped me to dig a bit deeper into it.

It was all good with my scripts but the I didn't quite understand how PCNS is working. I didn't install PCNS Agents on my servers and that's why they didn't want to shutdown.

The UPS NMC communicates with each sever that has PowerChute installed.

Hi,

1 - PCNS communicates with the UPS through the network management card not through USB. You do not need to attach the USB cable.

2 - When you run the command file manually do the Linux system shut down? If so they it may be a permissions issue. PCNS is run using a local account and it is possible the account does not have the proper credentials. We have FAQ FA159586 that discusses how to trouble shoot PCNS command file issues.

If the command file needs to interact with the desk top you should read this post. http://forums.apc.com/spaces/7/ups-management-devices-powerchute-software/forums/general/13362/-fyi-...
