1) I actually got PCNS 2.2.1 to install on a couple of Linux machines. Now I want to go back and change settings. I discovered how to change the username/password, IP, etc. with a bizarre string of java. But how do I change behavior for different UPS signals?
2) 2.2.1 under Windows - none of the links will do anything but display the log. How to fix (other than uninstall-reinstall)?
3) 2.2.1 under Windows - username / password no longer works. No, I did not forget it... it just stopped working. How to fix (other than uninstall-reinstall)?
4) The .bin simply will not install on many Linux and Solaris machines... gives up with a Java error about out of disk space. Obviously, "uninstall and reinstall!" won't work! So... how to move forward?
5) When is APC going to produce a version of this software that is not bloated far beyond necessary, nor require Java / X Windows? This is absolutely ridiculous... there is no reason in the world why this software could not be one or more binaries and a text configuration file available via RPM and .tar.gz This software absolutely reeks of someone trying to show off how clever they are and/or trying to justify their job.
Installing software with this functionality ought to be a short, simple task, not an exercise in mind-numbing, headache-inducing futility.

Hey,
As for the 2rd problem, I have seen this issue a number of times. This issue is addressed in our kbase:
http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=7098&p_created=1111676763&p...
As for the 4rd problem, the issue you mentioned usually happens when you try to install PCNS from remote server or logging using an acount other than root. If this is not the case, you can install PCNS manually. Here is what I got :
In order to install PCNS 2.2.x manually on unix/linux box , you need two files; install.jar and util.jar. The way to get these files is to use the command unzip to extract install script file. For example:
# unzip pcns221sol.bin Then you will get these two files in current work directory, save them in a temp directory like /tmp.
Once you get the 2 jar files, you need to make sure the java version on the system is 1.4.2 or higher. If java is not installed yet, you need to download it from SUN and install it on the system. You can find Java at the following link:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Next, You need to make sure Xwindows is installed on this computer. A remote display is not supported.
After java is properly installed and X-windows is running on the system, open a command line interface and make sure that you are in the same directory as install.jar and util.jar. Run the command as follows:
#java –cp .:install.jar:util.jar load
The installer should pop up at this point.
I hope it hepls. let me know the results.

To fix the space problem, search the Linux machine for any type of PowerChute installed, any folder that contains information regarding PCNS, delete it. After that, reboot the machine, and you should have no problem installing PCNS.

Sorry to invade to this thread, Can any expert advise me what is the syntax of shut down command file in a Linux server? Pls provide an example. I want to shut down the database of the server on the event of 'on battery' , with a script.
I have to put the command file on both pages of 'Configure events' and shut down configuration page?
Thanks for any reply

If you want the command file to run only one specific event, for example on "UPS: On Battery", you would only select the command file option under that event and leave the option under "Configure Shutdown" alone.
If you want the Command File to run in any event of shutdown, you will need to set the command file in the "Configure Shutdown" section of PCNS. This basically makes running the command file a blanket rule, as opposed to the "Configure Event" option which only makes the cmd file run for a single event occurence.
Maybe one of our Non-APC forums users can help with the Linux command file request.
