I recently bought 2 new sua1500rm2u ups's and 2 ap9607 interface expanders. The servers on the expanders serial interfaces do not see the ups and will not install the agent(old v. 6.5 I think). I have a mix of windows 2k8 and 2k3 machines. I was hoping to keep that version of the software so that I could have the server peice for managment, but is that where my problem lies?

hi
let me go over a couple of items with you.
1.) the cable that is physically connected to the smart signaling port on the UPS itself should be connected to the server using the 940-0024 or 940-1524 DB9 APC cable. when you install Powerchute business edition (which I will provide a link at the bottom of this post), you can have the UPS be autodetected during the installation or choose a Smart UPS in Smart signaling mode. once you access the interface that i note below, you should be able to make changes to the UPS configuration, see available runtime, and current voltages, etc
2.) the servers that are physically connected to the AP9607 serial expanders should be using the 940-0020B cable. when you install the powerchute business edition agent on them, you need to specify a Smart UPS in SIMPLE signaling with interface expander mode. the UPS wont be auto detected I dont think.
so to confirm, each server needs to be physically connected in the right spot with the correct cable and then with the software installed, be set to the correct communication type. when you login to a simple signaling agent, you only will see either "online" or "on battery" for the status and that is it - no voltages, runtime, etc so it could look like its not working correctly. the UPS will only tell these simple signaling agents when it has a low battery which will tell them to shutdown.
you can find powerchute business edtion 8.0.1 [at this link|http://www.apc.com/tools/download/software_comp.cfm?sw_sku=SFPCBE801&id=125&family=&part_num=&swfam=...]. keep in mind, each agent installed on each server, will be accessible via a web browser at http://
also, you could look into putting a network management card into your UPS(s) and shutting down everything over the network depending on your overall set up.
hope this helps! let us know if you have any questions.
