Powerchute Business adition question

Dear friends,

I want to buy the APC Smart-UPS SC 420VA 230V.

My questions are:

1. Will it work with powerchute business edition?

2. I want to be sure that if the elctricity is down for long time and the ups is off, when the power comes back the ups will open automiatically. Can someone please verify this?

Thank you very much

Hi,

Yes, Smart-UPS SC products are designed to use PowerChute Business Edition.

And yes, this and most UPS models will always turn on when AC power returns if it was shutdown due to a low battery and this would be the default. Some UPSs, specifically when told to shutdown by software like PowerChute (rather than turning off because the battery was depleted), can be programmed to turn off and stay off but this is not the default behavior and would have to be modified by the user in software.

Thanks so much for the answer!

So i go for the APC Smart-UPS SC 420VA 230V!

My purpose of buying this ups is that i just installed a tisun solar station on my roof. It warms a special liquid with the help of the sun and then this liquid is moved inside tubes to a big boiler.

The movement of the liquid is made by a wilo motor http://productfinder.wilo.com/en/GR/product/00000000000179fe0001003a/fc_product_datasheet

This motor as you can see has a maximum power consumption of 63 watts.

The main problem is that this motor should always be on, or at least be off for the less time.

Can you please assure me that even if the electricity goes down for long time, then the ups will start automatically when the power is back on , and the motor will start again?

Thanks so much for the support!

Hi,

Smart-UPS SC are not designed to work with motors. The UPS while on battery outputs a step-approximated sign wave. This waveshape, while okay for computer-type equipment, is not particularly compatible with most motor loads. The result may be that motors run very slowly, erratically, or not at all when the UPS is on battery.

To protect your equipment, we recommends first determining the appropriate size UPS for the motor load in question. Ensure that the Volt Amp rating of the UPS is sufficient to handle the start-up inrush current draw of the motor. Secondly, select a UPS which outputs a Pure Sine Wave when on battery, such as a Smart-UPS SMT750.

Hello,

I can just assure you of how the UPS operates by default. Yes, it is designed to turn back on automatically when AC power comes back after the UPS has previously turned off due to discharged battery. This happens by default even if you don't use PowerChute at all.

While the power consumption of the motor is low and the amperage is low according to that data sheet, have you tried to contact the motor vendor on what they recommend for a UPS?

Because it is a "motor" of sorts, sometimes motors cause a lot of in rush current (which I don't think is the case here), or they cannot do well with a step approximation to a sinewave like this UPS has. I would just want to ask the vendor if they know anything about that and if a pure sinewave UPS is required. The problem could be that when the UPS goes to battery power - which is when this UPS will output a step approximated sinewave - the motor could have a problem accepting that and reboot or not operate at all. I don't want you to be disappointed if you see an issue like this without checking on it first. It may not be an issue at all.

If there is a problem, you'd want to look at a pure sinewave UPS such as the SC's replacement - SMC, or something with SMX/SMT prefix. We have a knowledge base here that talks about these issues a little bit and I just wanted to share with you for reference -> http://www.apc.com/support/index?page=content&country=ITB〈=en&locale=en_US&id=FA158851
