PowerChute Network Shutdown Newbie Question

Hello,

I am newbie when it comes to PowerChute and how it works with how I setup my UPS Network Management Card; I am hoping someone can help shed some light.

My setup looks like the following:

I have a SmartUPS 5000XL with a Network Management Card. I have about 10 server connected to the SmartUPS. I have configured the notification portion of the Network Management Card so it can email me via a local SMTP server when it completes a self test.

I also recently installed PowerChute Network Shutdown version 221 on one of the Windows Server connected to the SmartUPS.

Here are some questions that I need answered because I cannot find a Administrators Manual for PowerChute Network Shutdown.

1. If I have 10 servers connected to my SmartUPS and I want to be able to shutdown all 10 because of a power failure, do I have to install PowerChute Network Shutdown on all 10 servers?
2. PowerChute Network Shutdown allows me to notify users when the battery discharges. How exactly does it notify users? Does it use the (email) notification setup I have on the Network Management Card?

The PowerChute Network Shutdown software does not support email. Any email notifications would come directly from your UPS's Network Management Card.

If you are planning on shutting down all 10 servers, you will need to install PowerChute Network Shutdown on each server. One Network Management Card can safely support and shutdown 50 servers total.

Also, the PowerChute Network Shutdown software will notify users with broadcast messages using Windows Messenger Service.

So, our building lost power on a weekend for 5 hours and I have PowerChute Network Shutdown configured to take my server down gracefully after 3 hours of running on the UPS battery; can I then have the Network Management Card email me regarding the loss of power?

You can. In the interface of the management card you should find a Network menu. One of the pages within the Network menu should be for configuring email. The card supports 4 email addresses.

I have the same software install too and I did added the server too, but How do you test it to make sure it will work during a power outage?

Can some explain me how that will work.

The easiest way to test if the UPS is communicating properly is to just trip the breaker for the UPS and force it on battery. That will test communications with the PCNS client. Just log into the PCNS client and look at the event log.

When you installed the PCNS client, you had to register with the IP Address of the NMC, it should have told you failed or successful. If successful it would've registered with the NMC interface under the PowerChute section. Then you can log into the PCNS interface and see Communication Established.

Everything seems to be working fine. I was able to do a test too, but is there any way that it will communicate with PC and Server and tell it to come back on when the power comes back on.

Hello,

The information for turning the Server/PC back on is actually within the BIOS. The field varies based on the type of manufacturer, but I know on most Dell machines, the option is called "ACRestore" and needs to be set to on. Once the UPS reboots itself and once again provides power to the outlets, the BIOS is responsible for sensing input power again to turn back on.
