Noisy fan on Static Bypass Switch at bottom of Symmetra PX 10k

Hi there. We've had a Symmetra PX 10k UPS for about 3 years, and it's been trouble-free up until now. One of the power modules developed a noisy fan and a couple of months later failed a self-test. Removing and reseating didn't fix it, so we bought new power module.

Now, the static bypass switch at the bottom of the unit has developed a noisy fan, and I'm getting paranoid. I've never seen this module for sale, so I don't know know how much it would cost if it went bad. Anyone know how expensive it is, and/or how hard to replace it is?

I heard from our local APC FSE that there is a fan replacement kit available for static bypass switches being shipped now. Of course that doesn't help folks like you and I who have 4 or 5 year old Symmetra PX's on the floor. I had a fan die in one of our switches and the cost of replacement was around $1900 Cdn. APC was unable to sell me a set of fans...I asked...

What I did do was after the new switch was installed, I took apart the old switch to see if I could replace the fans myself and keep the switch around as a spare rather than throwing it away. The part number on the fan is "B33534-55 APC" ...its a NIDEC fan, 24 Volts DC, 130 CFM, approx 11 or 12 watts power consumption. NIDEC has a part no. "B33534" in their catalog with this spec, and I believe that the only difference in the extra "-55 APC" suffix is that the model NIDEC makes for APC has the special pigtail...otherwise they are the same. I couldn't source a NIDEC fan locally, so what I did was to buy some NMB model 4715KL-05W-B50-P00 fans which have the same spec. I then removed the old fans from the switch, cut the pigtails off them which I soldered on to the new fans, and they installed without a hitch.

It all depends on your skill/comfort level as to whether you want to try this yourself. I am an electronic engineer/tech who has 25 years repair experience so I don't shy away from simple things such as this.

Brian,

Static Bypass Switch fans are not replaceable, and the SBS is not user-replaceable. You might want to call into support and speak with them regarding it.
