No LCD display on new APC UPS SMT1500

I just got a new APC SMT 1500 . I followed the enclosed literature on setting up this unit. All the led lights are lit up. However the LCD doesnt show any characters; I could not do any initial settings on this UPS. Is this unit defective or am I missing something?

I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you. Let try doing this, first let us remove the front bezel of the unit followed by the metal cover that covers the battery. Be careful with the cable that is connected on the bezel. After removing the covers, you'll see that the cable is attached on a circuit board inside the UPS. What I'd like you to do is to carefully reseat the cable on that circuit board. If you can remove the cable on the bezel, reseat it as well. Let me know what happens.
