Newbie needs Help: PowerChute Network Shutdown for ESXi

Hi thanks in Advance,

we have a UPS lets say 90.90.90.2. A Host 90.90.90.30 and one ESXi-Host 90.90.90.31 on which are running two VMs (90.90.90.32, 33).

The ESXi VM Host again is just a Client running on a VM Vsphere Server on a different Network via VPN lets say 192.168.20.40.

I want to use PowerChute Network. I have installed it on the Host 90.90.90.30 as a Stand-Alone Host and entered the Configuration for the ESXi-Host 90.90.90.31. So far everything Ok.

But the Question is: How can I now shutdown the ESxi and the VMs ? There is no option available. No Menu where I can choose from. The only thing I can do is to program a batch file for using the shutdown settings. Is this the only option ? There is no Virtualization setting etc.

I think I have installed something wrong or installed the software on the wrong machine ?

What to do next ? These are all the Options I can choose: See picture.

Hi,

In the PCNS web interface under Communications Settings enter the ip address, user name, and password for the host you would like PCNS to power down. Then under Configure Events select on battery or runtime remaining and enter a value that you would like PCNS to start the shutdown. See the help files for a description of both settings and you should read the PCNS VMware User's Guide. 

Example: UPS on battery event has been configured with a 120 second delay. The UPS switches to battery and PCNS is informed. PCNS wait 120 seconds to see if the event clears. It has not cleared so after the 120 delay PCNS begins the shutdown process. PCNS sends a signal the the configured ESXi host that it needs to power down. The host will then command the VMs down if the host has been configured to do so. See Schneider Electric FAQ FA159688 for assistance with configuring the ESXi host to power down the VMs.

My next question would be. Lets assume I have choose "battery exceeded" checked and entered 120 seconds. So when the battery is exceeded Power chute will advice VMware Host to shutdown. But when will the vms restart ? automatically ? Next question. What is if the Computer on which PowerChute is installed is not working, will the VMs also shutdown ?

Shut down and start up of the VMs is the responsibility of the ESXi host. See Schneider Electric FAQ FA159688

No. The host and the VMs will not be powered down. I recommend you install the PCNS Appliance on each host and configure that specific instance of PCNS to power down the corresponding host not a remote host.
