New to racks, need help making decision

Hello,

I need to make the move to racks for my businesses data center, aka my office for the next few months.

I will be mounting an:
IBM ISeries 525
Several Proliant DL series
Several new Dell rackmounts (not sure on model, a software vendor is providing them to me, bu they are new models)
Watchguard x750 firewall
24p switch
shelf for an older non RM server I will phase out.
UPS

Need to know:
1. What racks would work best? 42u is as high as I can go but if there are any shorter racks I don't see myself using much more than 20u soon.
2. Will the IBM and others fit together in the same rack well?
3. What do I need for power distribution in the rack?
4. ?? What else am I forgetting? New to this!

Thanks!

Hello,

I would recommend using the Rack Configurator tool located on the APC website to help determine how to setup and configure your rack. You can even Configure To Order with our AR3100 42U standard SX rack, or the AR2105BLK 25U VX rack. The configurator has an expanse list of Non-APC devices and will be able to determine if they can be mounted in the rack. All standard EIA-310-D compliant pieces of equipment will fit into our Netshelter line of Racks. The configurator will also help you figure out which APC devices can be used, including Rackmount Power Distribution Units.

http://configurator.apcc.com/products/powerstruxure/configurator/PSX_ChooseRackTool.cfm?cc=US&startC...

If all the pieces of equipment are standard EIA-310-D compliant and compatible with 19" wide mounting, there should not be a problem installing the devices into our racks. In terms of Power Distribution, we have 0U PDU's that will fit into a channel in the rear of the rack, and will not take any U space. Something you may be forgetting is keeping the rack cool. We have a variety of fan units that promote proper air flow and can keep your IT equipment safe and cool.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can help with. Thank you.

I have tried the configuration tool. For some reason it shows nothing fitting under the Validations section?

Use 42U. Never fails ๐Ÿ™‚ If you opt for shorter -- it's not that cheap, takes the same space from your floor, you'll have to kneel before it for any maintenance, you wouldn't be able to use any proper cooling systems. 42U -- great investment (especially AR3100) -- it will be suitable for any computer hardware for any foreseeable future.
