Needing more power for new rack

I'm looking to power a new rack, right now we have 3 servers powered off of a SmartUPS 700 rackmount. We have pretty beefy servers on there now 2 of them are Dell PowerEdge 2950's with 2 quad core processors in each and the other one PowerEdge 1850 is just has 2 dual core 3ghz. It can't handle the power right now and according to Dell each server is taking around 2.3amps or around 450-500w each. We are planning on adding two more of the 2950's in the future so I'm wondering what you would suggest that is rack-mountable that could support the power load of all 5 of these servers?

Problem is I am looking for something that has a standard 120v plug input and several 120v plug outputs.

Infact now I hear I must plan for 2 of them and we want to run a total of 10 servers (plan on running in the near future) so we need something to support 6 servers right now and 4 more in the future. I was also told to allow it to support some other devices but I don't think they make UPS's that large to run all our phone switches, kvm switches, firewalls along with those servers allowing only 2 ups's, I don't think thats possible. Again, if it supports the regular 3 prong plugs input and output 120v that's what I'm looking for. After doing the automatic system configuration tool for selecting a UPS it chose something with 220v input and outputs

I'm running about 7 Dell 2950 servers each with dual power supply units, a couple switches, kvm switch monitor combo. We only have NEMA 5P-15 plugs 120v and I would like several of the UPS units to cover protection for them. Anyone got any suggestions please??

Not that I want to divert income from APC but have you considered vitualization instead of adding more servers?

The largest UPS you can utilize that has NEMA 5-15P input plugs is the SUA1500RM2U. The problem therein lies that if you put 2 or 3 servers with redundant PS's on there, and they all transfer over to the same 1500 at the same time, the inrush current may overload the UPS, and if this is during an on battery state, will cause everything to power down. For proper graceful shutdown, you are also looking at 1 AP9617 Network Management Card for each UPS, and doing a custom install of PowerChute Network Shutdown.

If the electrical requirements can be changed to a hardwire, 4 wire system from the service panel, I would recommend a Symmetra LX as your main UPS, with one NMC controlling shutdown on all servers, and then either hardwire out to receptacles to power each rack, or install backplates onto the LX that would feed 120V PDU's in the rear of each rack.

Okay, What I was thinking of is placing one ps from a server on one UPS and one on the other UPS. I don't think they would redo the electrical connections for me so that's where I'm stuck, the building just got built and they just spent a ton of money on it. Now the servers can run on only a single ps so I wouldn't see a problem when your running on battery mode just running on a single power supply.

Hello,

If you're looking at 1 or two servers to two UPS (1 PS from each server to each UPS), that should not be a problem. However, you might want to inquire as to why the building was facilitated with only NEMA 5-15R's. Usually the commercial standard at the MINIMUM is NEMA 5-20R. They should have also given you capabilities for 208V input as well, especially if this is within a designed data center, or server room.
