I recently upgraded my NMC2 firmware to the latest rev and have not been having any success setting up SMTP notifications with my Gmail account.
My last email test results failed:
Last Test Result: Test email failed; SMTP configuration error.
Last Server Response: No data.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What mode is your authentication set to - If supported, Always, or implicit? I've gotten this to work on Gmail personally so I am not really thinking firmware bug yet since this is one of the main new features so I know it has been well tested. Also, config.ini would be helpful too.

The other thing I thought of - does your server require an SSL cert to be presented to send the email? There is a setting for "Require CA Root Certificate" and you can load an SSL certificate. Just wondering since it is disabled on yours but I imagine you might have caught that setting prior or know if its required for sending email using SSL.

Hi robotvoice,
Can you provide the config.ini please and post here? You can get this from Configuration->General->User Config File *download* in the web UI. I can tell how you have it configured from that file.
I find it easier to add a recipient and use the custom server option so you can specify smtp.gmail.com for the server and then the SMTP port and SSL authentication option. It sounds like it might be set up incorrectly and I can help.

I noticed I had a typo under the email server settings when I was looking over the config file. I fixed that and now I am getting a DNS error instead of an SMTP error when I test the email again. I have attached my config.ini
DNS settings should be right on my end but please let me know if I missed something obvious. Thanks.

OK - can you do a DNS test via the card by FQDN or host and do smtp.gmail.com? (Configuration->Network->DNS->Test in web UI)
If the card cannot resolve smtp.gmail.com then we have to look into that. You can also check your event log and see if its full of DNS errors. Or switch your primary and secondary for testing since I see you're using 8.8.8.8 as your secondary and an internal IP for your primary.
I am doing it and here is what I see:

I'm having a similar issue -- unable to use any TLS/SSL authentication to send notification emails. NMC passes DNS tests for FQDN of smtp.gmail.com.
First attempt was with server smtp.gmail.com, with full Gmail username and password, port 465. Error is "Test e-mail failed; SMTP configuration error."
Second attempt was with our own Postfix server (which requires TLS). Used the proper login credentials on port 587 (which is our SMTP submission port), and get same error.
I'm wondering if perhaps there's a bug in the NMC's SSL/TLS implementation? I can get it to work without the TLS if I whitelist the individual IP of the NMC, but that's a temporary fix and not something we can do long term. Here are the log files from the mail server when the NMC tries to authenticate:
Jun 18 08:05:49 carbonfiber postfix/smtpd[28563]: SSL_accept error from c-12-345-67-89.xxx.xxx.xxxxx.net[12.345.67.89]: lost connection
Jun 18 08:05:49 carbonfiber postfix/smtpd[28563]: lost connection after STARTTLS from c-12-345-67-89.xxx.xxx.xxxxx.net[12.345.67.89]

I've tried all three!
With "Always" and with "If Supported" the NMC2 result is:
Last Test Result: | (myaddress@gmail.com) Test e-mail failed; SMTP configuration error. |
Last Server Response: | 220 2.0.0 Ready to start TLS |
and the mail server says:
Jun 18 08:05:49 carbonfiber postfix/smtpd[28563]: SSL_accept error from c-12-345-67-89.xxx.xxx.xxxxx.net[12.345.67.89]: lost connection
Jun 18 08:05:49 carbonfiber postfix/smtpd[28563]: lost connection after STARTTLS from c-12-345-67-89.xxx.xxx.xxxxx.net[12.345.67.89]
With "Implicitly": the NMC says:
Last Test Result: | (myaddress@gmail.com) Test e-mail failed; SMTP configuration error. |
Last Server Response: | No data. |
and the mail server says:
Jun 18 08:16:51 carbonfiber postfix/smtpd[28956]: lost connection after UNKNOWN from c-12-345-67-89.xxx.xxx.xxxxx.net[12.345.67.89]
(config file attached)

OK - just got it to work with Gmail as the SMTP server. "From" address has to username (full Gmail address) and TLS must be set to "Implicitly"
But it's still not working on our own internal SMTP server, even though the server response according to the NMC is "Ready to start TLS" - which means it's waiting for the NMC to authenticate.

I don't suppose you can do a packet capture? I know we've had issues in the past for example with the 220 response was too large and over ran a buffer previously.
If not, the error information here might be good enough for me to research further but I figured a packet capture might avoid further questions.
