Evidently still a problem with latest version. I wasted hours back and forth with tech support, finally used the antiquated method of hyperterminal. I still don't have an answer of why I had to hunt down a laptop with a serial port on it to config. Why does APC not upgrade the interface to use a USB cable for this?

there is no known issue with the latest version but release of a newer, completely new updated version (5.x) is imminent. i am not sure what the reason for not using USB is yet to be honest but we offer a few different methods mentioned here: http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3061

After trying and failing multiple times to set the IP, I configured the card manually.
Plug your APC UPS serial cable into a computer with a serial terminal installed (like Windows HyperTerminal), and you can access the card via the terminal. It's been a while but I believe 9600 baud 8-N-1 will work.
Probably a good idea to not have the APC UPS management software running on this computer since the management will want to use the UPS serial cable too for smart signalling.
