Module Disposal

I replaced a Symmetra LX Power Module (SYPM4KP) and have the old one sitting around here, thinking someome someday may try to replace the batteries and save us the money when another one dies. Well, after reading into it a little, I now know my boss would not want to take such a chance for relatively little savings. So what do I do with it now? Does anyone have any use for these after they've gone bad, or should I just throw it into the Columbia River with all our other garbage?

Thanks,
Ben

the symmetra LX battery modules, SYBT5, might have some value to someone for the lead or other components in them. i heard at one point our authorized repair center, coastal business machines, was taking them and paying people but that was a while ago.

This policy has recently changed. APC will actually take back any APC battery module or UPS when you are ready to dispose of it as long as you are in the US or Canada. I just finished working with them over the phone and they will set you up with prepaid shipping labels to send it to them. Just supply the packaging. Also consider this is a greener approach to disposal. The modules are being reused and recharged opposed to Best Buy or someone paying a third party to break down the components. We just unloaded 700 lbs of lead battery acid on Schneider Electric. It's been a good day.

it might depend on model for some applications and i dont think we will always actually pay the shipping cost but will accept the units for disposal.

Best Buy takes old computer devices and monitors. Tell them it's part of an old PC, and you took the hard drive out already. ๐Ÿ™‚

I took them an old 75-pound 1980's U-Matic VTR and they didn't even notice.

Thanks, and nothing's going in the river. There are a lot of free recycling options here in Portland. I've just heard that dead batteries have a small resale value, and maybe coupled with all the expensive hardware in the module, I thought someone might be interested in paying for the shipping and save me the drive to Far West Fibers.

I'll leave the question answered, so I'm not sure you'll even see this, but is it true that people will pay for spent batteries? I have many many pounds of them, in addition to the Symmetra LX module. The UPS units have long since been recycled, but we've been saving batteries because someone in the warehouse said he could get money for them. I've reminded him of this maybe a dozen times, but there they sit.

And oh yeah, Javic, that's a good idea. Best Buy is closer, and I can tell the kid that it was a server they sold me 8 years ago. I had to look up the U-Matic VTR. I can imagine the counter boy's confused compliance.
